Is it possible to have too much flow?

I have a 50g tank 36"X18"X18" and I have (2) MaxiJet 1200's and an Enheim 1262 providing the return from the sump via (2) locklines. I just took one of my MaxiJet 1200's and bought a MOD KIT from maxijetmod.com now it looks like a hurricane in my tank. I think the modified Maxi is pushing 2000gph. I have mostly softies and a few SPS. IS THIS WAY TOO MUCH FLOW?

Can softies be damaged by too much flow?

You have to research and study to see how much flow all of your corals prefer. In general, softies are medium-low flow corals and SPS are Medium-Heavy flow, but as always... there are exceptions to the rules. If you get each coral in the right amount of flow, they will be very happy!

Upgrading your flow was a good thing. If you get the chance, upgrade the other Maxi-jet, or better yet buy a Tunze Nano-stream!

You definitely are okay with flow on your tank. Just don't put a low flow coral that will get torn apart directly in front of your modded MJ.

The problem is the Modified MJ is huge and blasts everything. I don't think I could find a low flow area of the tank with this thing. I am now researching the Tunze Nanostream. Do you have experience with them? Do you need a controller for them from Tunze or can I use my ACJr.?

I think Erik (Kreeger1) has some experience with the Tuze nanostream.

Why don't you put the MJ on a timer, that way the tank gets blasts of, what I would consider, medium flow. Honestly, only you can judge the status of your own tank. If you think that it looks like a hurricane and if a lot of things are falling down, you really only have a couple of options. You can reposition your corals and make them more secure, or you can lessen the flow.

You can use the tunzes on the ACjr and just have them on/off, as long as you give them 15 minutes before restarts (you can run it for 14 minutes, have it off for 1 and start it again, just 15 minutes between restarts, not 15 min cycle btw). The 6055, which will be out end of March, is fully controllable, so you can adjust the amount of flow, can cycle back and forth or can create random currents.

the 6025 is $65 i think, the 6045 is $90 and the 6055 is $200 and the controller for the 6055 is $240 and runs multiple 6055s.

I think the 6025 is about 1/3 the flow of the MJmod, 6045 is about 1/2 and the 6055 is 2/3. Depends on how you did your mod.

Personally I think almost 3k flow in a 50g softie tank is too much if on all the time.

(2) RBTA, (2) CBS, (2) True Percula CLowns, (1) Neon Dottyback, (1) Yellow Tang, (1) Copperbanded Butterfly FIsh

Xenia, Frogspawn, GSP, Zoos, Ricordia, SPS, Torch, Hammer, Kenya

I'm not so worried about the fish its the soft corals and my RBTA.

i have two nano stream 6025 in my 50 and i have a 6055 on the way that wil be way more flow than the mod i dont think its too much

The MJMod really kicks it out. The 2 6025s and the 6055 will still be less that what he's has (2x660 + 1x1400). The MJ is 2000+ and he has 1200 for the other MJ and the Eheim.

yea MJ your are right i wasjust thinking that i remember some maxi mods do 3,000gph
i would take it out and trade it for something smaller
i guess its like he has a big tunze in a 36x18 tank must be tons of floww
as far as can you have too much id say no just depends on what corals you have LPS and Softies can be blown too hard for sure
