Is it possible to upgrade a Mag pump with an impeller replacement?

I read a post that suggested upgrading a Mag5 to a Mag7 simply by replacing the impeller. Is this correct? The demensions for the 2 pumps are identical as well as the inlet and outlet sizes. A Mag5 is rated at 45watts and the Mag7 at 70watts. Dumb question, but does the larger magnet on the 7's impeller account for the difference in wattage? I'd love to bump up my Mag5 for $10.

I doubt that replacing the impeller is going to increase the GPH much. I suspect the differences are inside for the most part. I'll take a look at my Mag5 and Mag7 (I think I have both).

Yes, you sure can. I've done it. Mag3/5/7 are all the same pump. There are two impellers and two pump covers. The combo of the impeller and cover determine which model it is. The Mag3/5 use the same impeller. The Mag5/7 use the same pump cover.

More info:

Mag3 = 12575 impeller + 12535 pump cover
Mag5 = 12575 impeller + 12545 pump cover
Mag7 = 12585 impeller + 12545 pump cover

I wonder if you could make a Mag6 with a 12585 + 12535

i upgraded my mag 5 to a mag 7 by changing out the impellers. i think the mag 7 impeller was like 12 bucks. it definetly works and is alot better then paying 70 buck for a new pump.that picture doesn't do the mag7 impeller justice its baldes and magnet are alot beefier than the 5. when i got it i didn't think it was goins to fit but it dropped right in and cover went right back on haven't had a probllem yet
