Is it possible....

...to add more sand to an established tank?

I'm not happy with how deep my sand bed is... I'd like to add 2-3 inches to it.

BUT, I'd like to do it without disassembling the tank and draining it or anything like that...

is it possible to add sand to the tank without screwing everything up. I understand taking out the rock and such, but I'd like to not have to take out the fish and other fun creatures...

Thanks!

ok... so it sounds like it's doable if I do it slowly... I think that would work for me.

Now I've just got to grab me some sand, a length of pvc and a small shovel...

where's my son's sand pail and shovel... :)

I have also read in one of my many books to push your existing sand back and add the new sand in an area of it's own. The point is that there was a valid reason to not pile new sand on top of the old existing sand ... I just can't remember why, but I took note of it.

you don't want to cut the o2 off to the anaroebic(spelling) layer of sand otherwise you have a rotting mess, just add the sand slowly you will be ok. Also expect a small cycle ( cyano, diatoms) on the sand, it will be short lived just don't panic
