Is it safe?

For my 55 I built my own stand. It is 2x4's and has 4x4 legs. My question, is that right now it has six legs. Two on either end and two in the middle. My 55 is 48' long. Can I remove the center legs so that I can add a sump and make myself a nice little storage area? The 2x4's are placed sideways so that they are more load bearing. Any ideas?

If it is 48' or 48 feet long then I am sure you need the extra support.

But knowing you made a typo Im sure you meant 48" or inches. You should be okay with just the supports on the ends. If you want a support in the middle, why not just remove one of the middle legs and leave the other.

Lol thanks. Sorry about the typo. I think that would work. Im not sure if I need the center supports though. A friend told me it was over kill

Can you fit a sump in from the ends? If so just leave the supports and put your tank in from the ends.

Since the tank is on your stand and filled already I personally would leave it. But since your have 4x4s as outer legs, you dont need the center ones.

My tank is round 200g and 6foot long. I have no center support. But looking at your picture I would suggest that you connect the legs together at the bottom, and add cross braces at the back and sides to stop the tank from falling over side ways.
FYI we have lots of earthquakes in New Zealand so I'm a big fan of cross braces!

The front and back legs are all connected together at the bottom and the tank is connected to three wall joists. This baby isnt going anywhere lol. I live in Maryland, we dont have any earthquakes

I bought my stand and it has center braces. I took out the front center brace and put in a sump them put the brace back in place. You could try that.

When in doubt you can always make a temprary brace while you remove the center piece .. and then once you have installed the sump you can replace the center brace. I recall that melev has a good picture of how to do this on his website.

I have the same setup I made my stand as a copy of the AG Mission style out of 3/4 inch oak, mine as well as there's does not have a center brace.
