Is it the carbon?

about 1.5 weeks ago, i added carbon (first time) and new phosgaurd. since then, i couple of my many zoa colonies have closed up and remained closed. also my tan toadstool leater not polyped during this time. is this a coincidence or might there be something else going on like not liking the carbon?

I was reading an article on here about carbon, i remember that someone was saying getting the water too clean with carbon and there sps did not like it. Maybe that's the problem.

Well I can say that after I started using a phosphate removal product that my zoas have been on the decline big time ever since. Right now, all of my like 6 zoa varieties are on the brink of extinction. I am not saying it is the phosguard at all, but my zoas were thriving until I started using it. So is it more than coincidence? My theory is that zoas and softies do better in average to poor water quality. At least that is what I tell myself to make me feel better.

Absolutly the Phosguard, It is known to effect Zoas and other corals if you run the flow to fast and get any Tines of the product into your water column. And i know they are beads but it still happens, I would take that stuff out and get some Eco-Bak for nutrient control that works without harming your corals. JMHO

What brand of carbon? BRS Rox.08, for example, is very aggressive. Starting passively flow with 1/2 the recommended qty would be my recommendation. When actively flow, always use 1/2 the recommended qty.

I believe carbon IS good for SPS. It clears the water for better light penetration.

Phosguard will do that to softies. I had a huge toadstool and used the Kent one (forget what it was, but same Idea and white beads) and it would not open and eventually got a hard shell on the skin from it. Like bill said, its the small particles that irratate the corals the most. Even powder fine particles will do it.

So would not running gfo carbon be a good idea if I have softys?

GFO and Carbon are 2 different things. Are you suing chemipure elite? because that has GFO and carbon mixed.

If you plan on only having softies and no SPS then you don't really need to run GFO or phosban, You can just do water changes. Softies like the water a little dirty
