Is it worth it???

Hey guys in your opinion is buying single polyp frags worth it? Would they just take to long to become colonies?

Is it a rare variety that you would be able to brag about and possibly resell 1 or 2 polyps of? If so then I would say why not, go for it. Otherwise, or if you want the colony, then probably not. You might be better off getting something that you would be happier with faster.

That said, there is a good point in the quality over quantity saying. If you like it and it is not too expensive, get it.

the chances of having a viable coral living are greater with a small colony or frag of several polyps compared to a single piece.

In the case if 1 or 2 polyps go south, you can frag those off and save the others.

I think it really depends on your system and the zoa you are wanting to get. There is definitely a growth difference between types of zoas. Some fast some slow. The problem I have run into with just a small amount of polyps is finding the right spot in the tank so they will be happy. If you can't find the right spot fast enough some can melt away on you. Also try and get as many details from the person that you are buying the polyps from. What they're using for lighting placement flow and supplements. That way you can try to get them happy as fast as possible.

The price that many zoanthid and paly colonies cost, is enough to deplete your savings account. Because of this I have no issue purchasing 1-2 polyps if I truly like them.

I buy one single polyp most of the time... Is easier to find a spot for it and you will spend way less than a colony.
Remember, this hobby is VERY expensive. And at the end you will have the colony you want. Just give it time to grow...

zoa polyp 1-2

zoa polyp 1-2

Why not purchase just 1-2 polyps they will grow into a colony eventually if you keep your tank between the right parameters. Just think of how the colonies of zoos that are for sale they took some time and dost likely started from a single frag plug with a couple of heads glued to it. I aquaculture zoanthids as part of my way to fund more money for my tank it is a great thing to watch a colony grow from a frag of a single head to tens of polyps. All in all buying one to two polyp frags is perfectly fine!!!

Just to point it out from a different angle, the only reason they're unaffordable in anything but single $200 polyps is because people buy them. Stop buying tiny frags and the bigger frags will cost the same, it's a buyer-driven shenanigan that vendors have conned people into thinking is acceptable.
