is Lexan silicone aquarium safe?

I found this at Home Depot and would like to know if I can use it for my aquarium.

The front says
100% Silicone sealant for
Lexan sheets and other plastics
Translucent
outstanding adhesion
permanently flexible
UV resistant

On the back under uses it says
for bonding polycarbonate of glass substances such as: Lexan Polycarbonate, glass, pc, pvc, aluminum, fiberglass(FRP), metals,Abraded Rubber

also on the back it says
This 100% silicone sealant is our best product and is an excellent candidate for use on lexan sheet and most plastics. this GE patented quick setting formula will cure in as little as 12 hours and should be tooled within 6-12 minutes after application, in addition, this product provides outstanding adhesion to most glass and metal surfaces. it offers a watertight seal and is excellent for marine applications above the waterline.

Basically I'm wondering if anyone has used this or think it sounds OK to use, It says good for marine purposes above water but do you think it would be OK for underwater?

Thanks in advance
Andrew

I prolly should of mentioned that it is made by GE..lol....I figured it would be ok and used it to silicone my baffles in the sump.If anyone thinks Im going to kill all my fish please let me know, but im going to test it with a zebra danio that i have had for cycling my 55g cichlid tank for a while now.

should be fine as long as it has no mildew resitance additives or anti-bacterial additives. These things are usually advertised very well on the package. IIRC the call it antimicrobe or something like that.

Thanks flfirefighter13 that was what I was thinking and figured I should be ok, but I think I'm still going to test it with my Danio...lol...btw does anyone have some tips on how to silicone acrylic 1inch apart from each other(bubble trap),I'm using a caulk gun and I don't see how I'm going to do it, I thought about some how making an extra long tip on the gun but I don't know if that would work or not

Do the center first, both sides, then run a bead up the side where the outside pieces go and move the outside pieces into to bead, this shoudl create the inside of the seem. Run a good bead on the outside of the 2 outside pieces, then take a something with a little rubbing alchohol and run it down the inside seem to smooth it out. I generally use a piece of 1/2" pvc with a rubber glove on the end, jam a bunch of cotton balls into it and use it to smooth the seem, dip it in rubbing alchohol to prevent sticking. hope that helps.

Thanks flfirefighter13 that is really similar to what I did, except I thought for some reason it would be easier to do the fist one first the second one second etc... one more question...lol....(yeah right), what kind of light should i put above my refugium?

-thanks again
Andrew

fuge doesnt need anything special, some people run work lights from home depot, but not sure what lamp they use. Im useing a 65w compact flourescent fixture that was a cheapy, but I thorw coral down there every once in a while so I need to have at least something a little bright. In the past Ive used NO flouresents with no problem, but for 15 bucks that fixture Cowboyswife is speaking of could be perfect..... If you go to aquatic eco check the garage sale section, youmay be abel to find some sweet deals in there.

For some reason I cant find that light you are talking about cowboyswife on that website, but that sounds like it would be perfect, I have about 36" above the refugium, do you remember the length of your husbands light?

flfirefighter13- I saw Power Compact lights that have like a cone reflector but I dont know what K to get ( sorry Im not positive what the K stands for) I thought I remember reading something that 50,000k was good and there was one that was 55,000k at home depot for a few dollars

k= kelvin, or the color temp of the light. I suspect 5500 is more what you saw at home depot, 10,000-20,000 is the color temp of most MH bulbs. Cruis the lighting and equipment forum for better answers but id venture to say that 5500 would be fine for your fuge, will look yellowish compared to your other lights but from what ive read macro algae doesnt care that much. Coral does but for just a fuge you should be safe. check www.melevsreef.com as well, IIRC there was some good info on there about fuge lighting

I cant find it on the site either, but he found it when he went in to pay for some stuff he ordered. Its a 20" light, but if you needed it longer, you can get more than one and they are linkable. This is what it says on the packaging: Current Nova model #1100, 10w 10,000k daylight T5 slimpaq retrofit.

Thanks flfirefighter13, yeah I think you are right about it being 5500k

cowboyswife tyvm I think this light would be perfect for my fuge, does aquatic eco allow walk ins?

-Andrew

yes aquatic allows walk ins m-t 8to7, friday 8-5 and saturday 10-2, just looked thorugh there catolog and cant find the same kit mentioned but there are several setups that would work well. Grab a catalog while your there...... itll make you spend all your money, theres tons of good stuff:)

No prob A.T.DAWG. Yeah between the catalog and the garage there, money mysteriously just seems to fly out of pockets and wallets. Its the strangest phenomenon. :D

Ok, heres the deal they have a rack when you walk in the main door full of nova t'5 normal output 10,000k. The have 20"-36". They arent in the garage, just in the main lobby. You really cant miss them. They arent listed on the website, but there is also from what I heard a ton of stuff in the catalog that isnt on the website.

Its actually cheaper to spend the 15$ on the 20" ones than to buy a lamp and a bulb that is not as good for more money.

thanks a lot everybody, I'm definitely going to have to check this store out,(but I don't want to lose all my money :) ), O ya one more thing my sump is kind of deep because I used a 55g tank, do you still think one of the 36" T5s will work, It seems like it would but figured I would annoy everyone and ask another question :p

Thanks Again
Andrew
