Is my anemone splitting or what?

My biggest anemone decided to take a walk last night and wandered to the top of the overflow. Part of it got sucked through the teeth . I found it this morning and released it and put it on it's old rock. It attached right away and I thought it looked pretty good. It moved lower on the rock later in the day and when I looked at it closely I saw that the mouth is stretched wide open and the rock it is attached to is sticking out through the mouth! It is still firmly attached and the tentacles are full and extended. It looks like it might be splitting right down the middle.

Has anyone ever had an injured anemone split itself like this? It doesn't look like it is dying at this point. I'm worried about what I'll find tomorrow morning.

It is typical for them to spit after such an episode.
If you can see thru the mouth and there is not noodles showing then my guess is you will have two by morning.
My web site shows a split and what to watch for and do afterwards.

Thanks - no noodles. He looks good except for the rock coming out of his mouth! I was really hoping it was going to be a split and not a messy death. Funny, he planted himself and stayed put for 2 weeks then decided to wander - no changes in the tank at all. I guess he just had to check things out for himself.

Great on the no noodles.
Be prepared to do a water change tomorrow, it helps them to heal after a split, run new carbon also.
It will take about a week to form there mouths so no need to try and feed them.
Do you have a picture of it?

Agree with Nemo, very common for them to split after that. I've had it happen after my tank leaked and the anemones were out of water for several hours, but all survived.

Get pics if you can.

Yep, he is now 2! Well, I didn't want it to happen because of stress but they both look good. Will do a WC in a little while.

I don't have any powerheads in the tank but I can't figure any way to protect them from getting into the overflow. any ideas?

Thanks - Laurie

Congrats MOM:)
I don't have overflows so don't know what to tell you on that, hope someone will come along to help.
I just have the intakes to the ho filter and powerheads to worry about;)
Good luck with your new baby
