Is my hairy mushroom dying?

Hi, I've had two neon green hairy mushrooms that were fine for about 6 months. When I fed them they would close like a ball around food. About a month or two ago they looked like they were melting and spilling their guts. I moved them all around the tank to see if they would look happier but they did not improve so I set the rock on the sand and I have left it there. This is a picture. The two were so big they used to cover the rock and extend far beyond it. I dont know my water quality because I never test but other corals are doing well, including other mushroom corals. Any thoughts??

Were yountrying to frag them with the rubberband? My suggestion is to leave them alone or a quick dip with iodine to stop any infection.

yes its a metal strainer. I use it to get the loose mushroom to attach to a rock. I dont have a plastic one. The rubberband was used to attach it to a rock when the mushroom was doing well.
