is SCOTT'S PET SHOP GOOD?

I don't think it's anything special....

At the risk of sounding like a broken record my favorites are....

Coral Paradise
Oceans Floor
Rods-Reef

they have a good selection of fish... if you catch them when they get them. OTherwise, nothing special at all, and in my opinion, prices are bad.

Scotts has some good clownfish for $15@ and a varied selection of some saltwater, and a small corals tank, but it is a hit-and-miss. They are indeed pretty good for freshwater cichlids, and they have a cool stingray pond. Overall prices are high. It is certainly one of the cleaner shops and good for browsing.

High prices, low quality. Neat place to see but then go some where else to buy. The above shops are great as is reefplus.net

If you want a shop thats closer, Ocean Design on Irving Park & Narragansett, is a fantastic shop. they have a nice selection of corals & QT all their SW fish for 2 weeks. Coral Reef, in Norridge, on Lawrence, between Harlem & Cumberland, has the best prices on drygoods, anywhere.

I will say take some sunglasses with you, last time i was in there scott was adding on more SW setups and the MH's were bright!

at least compared to how dark that store used to be

Many people dont like it cuz they don't answer their phone. Its okay, but definately not anything special.

No kidding! and that F*****NG recording on the phone is so annoying! I wish I would be able to call from work and find out if they have something specific before I do the 10 minute drive in the oposite direction of my house. GrRRrR! :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

I go there once a while but their coral and fish stocking has gone down hill they just keep selling same old crap like Elegant corals and bunch of other stuff that wont live long in the home aquarium.

They are an okay store...For experienced reefers it can be a gold mine. I remember getting cultured colonies for $35 back in the day....ahh the good times :)

Just get there when they get their shipments in and do your homework.

Now, I might be biased because I live about 5 minutes away, but I think that Scott's has a pretty good selection as long as you are there a day or two after a shipment arrives. I think the prices are pretty good. Now granted, I moved out here from the city where Old Town was the closest fish sources, but I don't think that $9.99 for firefish or $39 for a foxface is that bad. How much cheaper than $15-20 for clownfish do other stores go?

I'm not an advocate for Scott's. I just thought that as local fish stores go their selection (only after shipments come in, stuff is usually gone in a couple of days) and prices seemed to be pretty good. There coral selection is hit or miss and has seemed to miss more than hit lately, but I like stores with flat prices for corals ($59 tanks, $49 tanks, etc). I was just kind of surprised at the response to the question. What stores around that area am I missing.

I agree, prices at scott's are reasonable. Unless you compare to mail order or some LFS I've never been to - and I've been to most.
