Is the display unit actually needed?

Can all it's programming and calibration be done from a pc or phone? Trying to decide whether I should buy an Apex Lite, Apex Jr, or just the head unit and modules/probes.

Unfortunately, there's still some things you need the display module for that can't be done via the web pages although Neptune continues to add functionality.

I'm guessing that's going to change with the release of the Apex jr. Or maybe they're giving us the option of a neutered controller or buying a display unit.

Yes. The ability to fully configure and run the system without a display is planned for inclusion in the upcoming v4.1 firmware. V4.05 beta already includes much of that.
