is there a black clown fish that starts out orange?

My girlfriend bought a clownfish thats orange with a little black tint and the guy told her that black clowns start out orange I have never heard this is it true at all

yup its true, he's not yanking your chain. Eventually the black will start filling in. Some go completely black, some will have orange faces which I have heard will turn black with age, or when they start hosting. I have a pair of black clowns and they had some orange on them, now only one of them has an orange face, the other's gone completely black. Very cool fish

Yeah, black ocellaris start out a dirty orange and turn jet black with age.

Some don't however, sometimes there is too much orange in the genes and those stay chocolate colored.
