Is there a snail that will multiply

I know I saw something somewhere a while back about saltwater snails that will multiply in your tank. I would like to know more about them and where I can get some. Any info is appreciated.
 
There are a few that will multiply in reef aquaria, Stomatella and Certh come to mind right off, but I am sure there are more.
 
I'm looking for something to go in my reef tank so reef safe is important. If someone could recommend a website where I can order some of these snail I would appreciate it

Eric,

Do you know how "easily" Ceriths reproduce or rather, what percentage of eggs actually develop to adult snails? I have some Ceriths and they have started to lay eggs. I've been thinking about buying some more but if I'm going to have a few hundred of them soon I could spend the money on something else ;)

Where did you get your snails?
 
Ok I just looked up pics of cerith snails and the pics look like the snails that live in the Bay about 4 blocks from my house (Sarasota Florida). I will go get a few tonight and post pics. Maybe I don't need to pay for them :)
 
I have some of the banded trochus. They are growing really big but no little snails showing up. I've had them about 4 months.
 
I couldn’t find the snails I was looking for it was high tide when I got there and I couldn’t get to the good spots. But I did get a few others . If you know what they are please let me know and if they are reef safe or not.

Hi, sorry I did not get back to you people sooner, I dont post to much during the day, as I work at nite (US central time for our people from other countries). I usually get my snails from our local LFS, and I have also been known to order from Foster and Smith Live Aquaria as well.

Sorry I have not followed the life cycle of the cerths in my tank, I have however seen egg masses and I do know how many I put in the tank origionally and have noticed increases.

Sorry dont know for sure what these are, but I am pretty sure they are not certh. Some others might know for sure what they are. One or two of them look like the Nassarus variety.

I understand the need to try to save money in our hobby, but please be careful when getting things from the ocean direct, if you are unsure as to what they are and what they eat because it could cause some problems with your tank later.
 
I will not be adding anything to my tank unless I know exactly what it is. I'm not being cheap so much as just having fun. It's fun looking around in the bay. I will go to another spot and see if I can find the snails I was thinking about. Thanks for the info

Sorry if my post sounded as if I calling you cheap, not my intention at all, I was just looking out for ya and your tank additions. It is fun to play near the ocean, did some of it myself in Hawaii. :)
 
No need to apologize just wanted to clarify my reasoning for collecting. I will go out tomorrow and see what I can find. But today I bought 50 astrea snails and 50 blue leg hermits. I would still like to find some that reproduce but needed some new workers for my tanks in the mean time
