Is this a bad idea?

So as I have been trimming back some of my colonies I have been taking small frags and attaching them to a random piece of live rock. Are there any problems with this mosaic like mixing of zoas?

IMO, it is not a good idea, but I like pure colonies. It may look cool to you and if you like it, more power to you.
One thing that will happen is one or two of the frags will be faster growing and will overgrow the others.

yea there is a big problem with it. Its not in my tank! great zoas.

Nice collection!! Great mix of colors. I think mfinn is right though. You may risk one zoa overrunning another. If they stay in nice, like colonies though, it will be a beautiful rock once it's completely covered. To help avoid one overrunning another, I'd place that rock on top of another in order to give each colony a place to grow once they run out of room on their current home.

Nice zoas! ALL of them. I like individual colonies but placed near each other on the rockwork. And it helps keep them from choking out each other. :)

You can send me that rock and I will gladley peel them off and start them individually for you ;) I am sure only a polyp or 2 will go missing

The ones in the lower right hand side, do they have a specific name? The orange center/yellow fringe looking ones. They are very nice indeed!!

Thanks for the replies. These are as I said only frags from the main colonies so they remain in tact. The ones on the lower right are eagle eyes I believe.

very nice rock! unfortunately you'll probably end up with only one or two different kinds of zoos on the rock, since the faster growing ones will drown out the others

I have never had a problem. I just cut away the outermost zoas once they get to close to each other. It is just like gardening, you have multiple plants next to each other, but you have to keep them trimmed so the most aggresive ones don't take over.
