Hi,

Just got this from the LFS. They called it Acan Maxima. But I can seems to find anything on that name in live aquaria.

Could this be a scoly?

Pls advise. Thanks!

I have a 2 headed piece, I just got which looks alot like that. Each head is about an inch and three quarters. It was uidentified in an Aussie shipment at the lfs. I thought it was a small scoly or a lobo. At night it puts out tentacles like acan acan lord so I'm guessing it's a large poyped lord or a maxima.

Thanks! Yes, it does have tentacles out at night like acans.

Thanks for the id.

I suppose acan maxima is still a new species. It does look like a cross between a scoly, lobo and acan.

Some online vendors call it a "mysterious meaty coral" too.

Well, I can't tell from the picture but if it is like mine, it doesn't have the heavy skeletal structure of a lobophyllia and nightime polyp extension is considerably different than the Scolymias I have. In fact at night it closely resembles an acanastrea lord howensis except for it's larger size. How large is the specimen in the picture?

Looks kinda like a lobophytum, no?

:D Nice site. Unfortunately , the coral presented as a lobophytum is msilabled . It is a lobophylia whcih we have already discussed. A Lobophytum is a leather/soft coral that looks nothing like that.

It's about 2inches expanded at the moment. During the night is about half the size. It behaves like acan at night. Probably why they call it acan maxima.

We've been getting more of them in the LFS lately.

Just picked up a green specimen tonight. :)

First impression I would say Scolymia, but Lobophyllia, Symphyllia, Scolymia, Cynarina, and some Acans can all look very similar when they are small or contracted. The only way to really know is to take care of it for a while and see what it grows into. Lobos and Symphyllias will usually become elongated and develop multiple mouths.

Yes 2inches give or take is about the same as mine. Mine is a double head with each head about that size.

they will eat just about any meaty foods at night when the feeders come out. Mine eat mysis and krill mostly, but will take whatever I give to them. They'll eat pellets also if they happen to blow that way.

here's some pictures of two of mine:
