It's a type of worm. I helped someone else ID one of these before but I can't remember the name and I can't find the thread! If LeslieH was around she would know.
This might actually be it. I thought this at first but the red part of the pic in question had me questioning it. I've seen a coco worm that dropped its crown and was out of its tube in person and it looked a little different (the way I remember it).
I didn't think they owned one. That was actually already suggested and I remember thinking "how could he not know he had one that big", but I didn't actually hear him say those words. Lemme ask.
I figure what we are looking at it a tube worm who has lost his plume and that's the vestimentum and trunk that is left. When you do a Google image search for Riftia pachyptila, a lot of pictures come up that are similar. I'm not saying that is the species, it was just the search term that led me to those photos.
