Is this an AEFW? Closeup Pic!

Superglue over any eggs you find and then do as others have suggested and set up a separate QT tank. You need to be acro free in your display tank for 2-3months so all the ones not on your acros have time to starve to death including any hidden unhatched eggs.

Qt and keep your dt acro free for a while to break the cycle time differs I lost my battle then waited a year before trying again. Good luck

Your not going to get rid of the AEFW by dipping and putting back into the DT. You will need to set up a stable QT tank and treat with dip once per week for 8 to 12 weeks. Putting them back into the tank will just make them infested again.

The problem I have is that I don't have a light fixture to support corals in a QT. What is a reasonably priced light that will sustain acros for that time period? Also, what type of filtration do I need?

Should I even move acros that look fine? I have a strawberry shortcake that shows no signs of anything bad. Looks very healthy.

I have one coral that has lots of empty coralites. Does that indicate that the AEFW has killed them?

AEFW do not eat the polyps. They feed on the tissue of the coral itself. You have something else in your tank nipping/eating the polyps on your acros.

You could get away with a 2 bulb T5 with an aquablue special and a blue plus from ATI in a 20L. Just make sure your params are somewhat stable.

Yes all acros have to be taken out. When you take the acros out that are infected the remaining free floating or swimming AEFW will go to the acros that are in the DT and start eating them. Also it has to be as stable as you can make the tank the stress from the removal and dipping with a unstable tank will stress them out and you will lose them very fast

Regarding the recommended 8-12 weeks of acro free tank. Seems a little on the long side (from my reading --not personal experience. My corals are in QT myself for the same error).

If the incubation period is 28 days --seems like if he leaves tank without acros for 6-8 weeks, it should be more than enough time for free swimmers and eggs on rocks (assuming eggs have been layed near any old encrusted corals) to hatch and then starve. 12 weeks seems a bit long. opinions? facts?

I think that once you have made multiple dips and are finally at the 8 week mark, then what is a few more weeks just to be absolutely and positively sure that all the AEFW are DEAD, is it really worth having to start over just to get them back in the DT?
For me i set up a 150gal in my garage to do the QT and then sold the setup when i was finished, so i had to be sure, but i dont think that makes the above any less valid.

Def have AEFW. And if one coral has eggs, then they all are infected. Take all your sps out of ur tank and either setup another holding tank.

Or the easiest way to get rid of them permanently is to take them all out and throw them in the trash. I know it's not what u wanted to hear, but it's the truth. Been battling Aefw for almost a year. Ended up setting up a frag tank just for my corals. My display has been acro free for 6 months. It really sucks. Makes me want to sell all acros and start over.

Are you dipping with bayer and supergluing the eggs? You should be able to wipe them out with just a handful of treatments.

Thanks for all of the comments. Yes, I did dip all of my corals and the corals where I saw eggs I through those away because they didn't look healthy anyway. The corals I have left all look fine and I don't see any eggs. How can I tell if I still have them in the tank? Is it correct that the eggs take 28 days to hatch so meaning if I missed any eggs then they will show up again in 28 days? I have ordered a 15 gallon tank and 2 bulb 24" t5 fixture and I plan to put my remaining acros in there for treatment if needed. Thanks.

This is a birdsnest. Do these look like flatworm bites? The coral is turning light but it may be bleaching, not sure. I moved it recently. Thanks.

it's weird, it looks like aefw damage but I always thought they only attacked smooth skinned acro's and I didn't think birdsnest was in that catagory. I have an aefw problem too and i'm torn on how to proceed. I'm considering setting up a qt to treat them. Scraping off all the encrusted acros in my live rock is really going to be tough though. I'm really heartbroken about it. i just finished treating red bugs.

I did a levasimole treatment. Do a search for the right amount to dose, I don't remember offhand. It's an in tank treatment. I did it for 4 consecutive weeks and rid the tank of aefw that way. Be very careful NOT to overdose. It was pretty easy to do vs setting up a quarantine tank

Thanks for your reply. I am lucky in that I only have smallish frags. I just ordered a 15G tank with a 24" 2 bulb t5 fixture. I am going to setup a frag tank and put my remaining corals in there. I have discarded all of my corals that look sick/damaged. My experience has been that they won't improve and will ultimately die. I don't know if the Birdsnest was affected by the AEFW or not but I definitely had them in my tank and may still, not sure. Some of my acros still look great so I am going to get them out of there and hopefully I can maintain them for a couple of months in QT and then get back on track.

Thanks again.

I know this is an old post but how did the birdsnest make out I have a small birdsnest frag in qt with similar marks

That wasn't aefw damage on the birds nest.
It looked bleached. It may also be due to a fish/ crab biting the coral?

Hi,
Unfortunately the Bird's Nest didn't make it. I did rid my tank of the AEFW. I have a consistent problem in my tank with some SPS corals becoming very light in color and ultimately dying. It's strange because some SPS do great and thrive but others do not. I generally have no problems with Montis and with Stylos. I have a few Acros that have done well but most Acros don't make it. And I have not had good luck with Birds Nest either. I have lots of flow and I have a good light fixture so I am having trouble figuring out what is going on. Good luck with your tank!
