Is this brook?

I'm afraid this may be brook on my clown, but it seems like the treatment is formalin, which sounds pretty scary, so I'd like to be sure before I treat with formalin.

Is anyone able to identify this as brook (or something else) with these pictures?

Thanks much:)

Well, just to follow up on this, I'm starting to question whether it's brooklynella based on the fact that it doesn't seem to be progressing as fast as everything I've read about brook suggests that it should be. I have been aware of this issue with the clown for at least 4 or 5 hours now and the fish really isn't showing signs of stress. It is still breathing and swimming normally. From what I've read about brook I would expect the fish to be near death after 4 or 5 hours.

In any case, I would love to hear what you guys think... whether it's brook or something else as I believe that either way it is something I will need to treat.

Thanks again

seems like it ...the problem is that it looks in on the display tank. So that means that your water and probably other fish are infected.

Paraguard is one medication that people mention for brook if you dont have access to Formalin (like me).

Do you have a QT setup and ready to receive your fish?

Unfortunately it is in the DT. I have set up a number of temporary containers to receive the fish. I introduced a powder blue tang several months ago. He went through QT, but apparently I missed something and he started showing signs of ick shortly after he was added to the DT. I don't know if he brought in brooklynella as well or what happened there. I haven't added anything to the tank, fish or invert in several months.

Given that it appears that there is ick in the tank as well as this, I'm planning to remove all the fish and TTM, then quarantine them until the DT has been fallow for long enough to kill ick and brook.

Unfortunately removing them may be easier said than done. I just spent several hours tonight trying to net the fish and failed miserably. I may need to borrow a fish trap from my LFS tomorrow and see if I have any better luck with that.

Is this brook?

Well, I'm happy to say that after spending some time reading suggestions on how to catch fish I found one tip that suggested turning the lights on full blast in the middle of the night. Just as the tip suggested, the fish were a bit groggy from sleep and blinded by the light and within about 10 or 15 minutes I had caught 7 fish, including the clown that was pictured and a spotted face tang that seemed to be suffering a bit as well.

There are still more fish to catch, but the ones I caught filled up the temporary containers that I had set up, so I will need to set up some additional containers tomorrow and try to catch the rest tomorrow night.

I still question whether this is brook. The spotted face tang seemed to be covered with individual dots that looked more like ick or maybe velvet to me, but I'm not sure I trust my diagnosis at all. I gave the clown and the tang a freshwater dip, since they seemed to be in the worst shape and everything I read suggested that may give them some immediate relief from external parasites. The other fish didn't seem bad, so I skipped the freshwater dip on them in the hopes of minimizing stress.

I did manage to get some formalin from my LFS today, but I'm a bit nervous to use it if I don't need to. The formalin they gave me just came from an unmarked container in their back room, so I don't know what the concentration is, plus she said it was several years old, so I'm not sure if it's even still good. Additionally it seems like pretty scary stuff.

If anyone has any ideas about whether this is brook or if I should go ahead and try to treat some or all of the fish with formalin I would definitely appreciate the suggestions.

Thanks again:)
Brett
