Is this HLLE?

He's been through 2 weeks of copper, then about a weeks break, and then he's just finished a 3 week course of Chloroquine phosphate.

He's showed these signs since finishing the copper treatment. I've observed the fish over this period, it hasn't deteriorated, and neither has it been seen on any of the other fish.

Does this look like HLLE to you?





Main areas of issue are the right pectoral fin, the 'bridge' of his nose/head and also the patch over the operculum.

It looks like the beginnings of HLLE to me. I doubt it was directly caused by the copper... but who knows, perhaps it aggravated the situation. Best bet is to start feeding this fish a wide variety of foods, soak his food in vitamin supplements and feed LOTS of nori. Being you've caught this early on, it's probably reversible.

Might just be an old wives' tale... but it wouldn't hurt to check the tank he's in for stray voltage. I assume you aren't using any carbon in the tank he's in with all the medication.

No I did however use the carbon mid way through to remove copper before the CP went in. One thing that did occur with the carbon was it wasn't still in the reactor, it was tumbling inside a little bit, I think it's a bit of a long shot, but one could suggest perhaps that it was the dust being created by the tumbling that caused it, but I think that's a bit far-fetched. The carbon was ROWAcarbon.

The only electrics in the tank are a bubble magus C5 (collection cup removed for aeration purposes only) and a little Tunze 1073.008 pulling water through a home-made bacteria filter.


There is plenty of algae on offer for all the fish throughout the day, traditional nori and occasionally New Era marine grazers, strangely enough this fish since being in the HT has only really been eating algae, it doesn't eat much meaty foods as far as I'm aware. I've seen this in a few other fish too.

Today I'll put some poly filter and at some point carbon in to remove the medication. ( the time is up on the medication)

The problem with HLLE is no one knows for sure what causes it. There are all kinds of different theories. Personally, I'm mostly with the "it's a lack of good nutrition" camp. Not saying you are to blame; but who knows how this fish was fed before you got him.
