Is this Ok to do?

My sump has a small chamber before the pump chamber, where there is a large black foam bubble filter. I read that these can be nitrate factories so I removed it and just put in some rubble rock I had left over. Here is a shot.

Is there any harm or benefit from doing this? I thought it would help break up any bubbles coming from the skimmer.

The Foam can become nitrate factories if not kept up with... I have the foam running now in my filter and when ever i change out the filter sock I change the foam piece... I personally dont think you need to have the rock there but doubt it would hurt anything...

How much rock do you have in your display tank... Most will say no rock in the sump, take it as you will!!

I clean any foam pads out when I clean my filter socks and it doesn't cause any buildup of nitrates. Also, siphon out the bottom of the sump once a month. I don't think there's enough live rocks in that slot to make a difference.

i think the rock is a way better idea cause all your water will pass through it if nothing else that will be some good rock in time.lol

I clean my filter socks in the washer machine, and my foam pads i just ring out in a bowl of fresh saltwater... No soap just ring them out and clean them liek you would clean out an sponge or pad just in fresh saltwater...
