Can you all tell me if this is ok the way i have covered up my powerhead intake to prevent any anemone's getting sucked into it? Iused the mesh stuff from walmart, zip ties, and fishing line. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looks really good.

If you ever make another one (it's convenient to have a spare so you can switch them out for cleaning.) you could try making the surface area of the mesh larger by making a bigger cone or box. that way the water is comming through more holes so it is moving slower through them. that will pull less junk in and clog less frequently. It looks like you are using the mesh with the smaller holes, so this will be even more important.

Kudos to you for taking the steps to protect your anemones :)

Thanks flighty, do you have a picture on the powerhead of the bigger cone or box example that you are taking about? I think i understand what you are saying, but need to see it. Should i use the bigger mesh size on the next ones?

Thanks

Yes, like the food box but bigger.

There is really no one right way to do it, but try yours for a while and see if there is an issue with clogging or restricted flow. I had a power head in my fuge which exactly fit one of those .5 liter coke bottles. I cut big holes in the side of the bottle and wrapped the craft mesh around that and secured it with rubber bands. It was ugly, but worked really well for a fuge where no one cares about looks.

Another idea I saw was someone who used a whole sheet of the large stuff and made it into a tall cylinder with a top and bottom. Then he put the whole power head into that and cut a little hole for the output to stick out of. he also stuck a heater in there. Then he put frags of zoanthids on the mesh and in a few months had a beautiful screen that you would never recognise as a power head and heater.

I don't have any picsof them, but the mesh is really cheep. get 10 sheets and a spool of 100 yards of the plastic string to tie it and you'll still be under $10 and can make all sorts of stuff.

I have tried mounting xenia and GSP to the mesh and they have grown well, but you need to have a large area of the mesh so the flow isn't cut off if that is put over a pump.
