Is this parasite or bacterial infection?

Jay,

RED BELOW

1) Any reliable/ not prohibitively expensive UV spectrophotometers you could sugggest? Not that I've found, I'm looking myself.

What about these, a) http://www.aquaticeco.com/customers...ctrophotometer-by-LaMotte/spectrophotometer/0
OR b) http://www.aquaticeco.com/customers/subcategories/3755/Photometers-by-YSI/photometer/0

In general, how do I know whether the UV spectrophotometer can measure chloroquine?

2) What is the half life of a chloroquine based medication such as quinine sulfate? ( chlorquine diphosphate is hard to find) I do not have much information regarding a comparison between quinine sulfate and Chloroquine - I've used both, but the latter seems more effective and (without a spectrophotometer) it *seems* like we are getting 7 to 14 days worth of activity from a single dose.

What constitues a single dose? What is the concentration in PPM or grams/gallon that you would recommend for a single dose?
3) Is a continuous bath necessary or is there a certain amount of time that is sufficient to eradicate uronema if fish is a carrier? I use it as a constant bath and have not tried it as a dip, so I don't know.

4) Can praziquantel be concurrently used with chloroquine medication? I just did a treatment where I ran them concurrently, no apparent problem, but obviously a one-time treatment is not proof. Interesting - Others have advised me otherwise, which is one reason I have strayed away from chloroquine

5) What is the effectiveness of copper to treat Uronema? This I do have solid information on: Minimal below 0.22 ppm, marginal at 0.23, and fatal to most fish any higher than that, so I try to avoid copper for this disease. Actually, I use Cupramine (non-ionic) and hold at about 0.4 ppm

Personal Husbandry Practice: I typically treat prophylactically treat fish with both copper (using cupramine) and praziquantel (prophylactically). Based on your insights, I would like to attempt substituting the copper with chloroquine. (the drawback with the copper is that the levels need to be constantly monitored and held for about a month.) My concerns with using the chloroquine are negative interactions and possible overdose from not having a way to measure

baobao,

Sorry - I'm having problems with your links - they keep locking up on me, and then I have to re-boot. I'm out of the office until 1/5/09, so I don't have access to any of my papers, books or reports, and can't really answer your questions without them.

I tried opening the "Drum and Croaker" web page, but couldn't get it to work either. It may be down for maintenance, or there may be something going on with my computer. Try going there and then looking at the most recent issue. There is either an article or an abstract from the Shedd Aquarium folks who gave a presentation on the subject of chloroquine.

I got one link to work, and it looks like the LaMotte unit does NOT work in the UV range. Don't quote me on this, but I think it needs to be able to read around 320nm and that unit stops at 350. I had tried dialing my Hach DR-2000 down all the way, and could not get it to work.

Jay,

This is a bit off-topic, but it's regarding the issues you're experiencing with your internet. If you're using Internet Explorer you may be experiencing issues due to malware. Microsoft recently announced that IE contained a major security flaw allowing malware infection from malicious and non-malicious "infected" websites. Apparently even Mozilla Firefox was vulnerable due to this newly exposed security flaw. You should be able to fix this security flaw by patching your IE or simply updating to the latest version of Mozilla Firefox (depending on what you're using). You will also need an up-to-date anti-virus or anti-spyware program to remove any malware programs that may have unknowingly infected your computer. It could quite possibly be due to something else, but I was experiencing the same "locking-up" events when trying to use IE last week.

Here's an article for more info: http://news.cnet.com/8301-1009_3-10125593-83.html
