Is this pinching, or something else?

Hi, Here is a pic of my 6" corcea that was added to my tank about 6 weeks ago and has been doing wonderful, until today when I noticed the lower mantle not extending like the rest is. I haven't changed a thing I do, other than a routine water change yesterday. Lighting is 3x250w mh 10k, and 2x180w vho actinics. The clam sets in the lower third of a 30", 175g tank. I don't see any obvious problems, such as worms, etc.. Any ideas? TIA, Tim

Update. I can see something now on the clam below the retracted mantle on the white cartlidge type flesh between the shell halves. It looks like some "bug" type of thing, but I can't tell what is might be. Should I do a FW dip? BTW, how do you adjust the ph of ro/di FW for the dip? What product is used for this? Also, can you add the coral dip solution to the dip, or strictly FW? TIA, Tim

the bug like thing is it a pyram snail? have u checked for snails?I wouldn't FWD yet, check for snails first. there is a new treatment for PM no firm results yet. post back with water parameters and other tank inhabitants

I don't think it's a snail. I did a search for the pyram snail and it doesn't look like that. I'm now unsure if it's a bug at all, but rather an irregularity or rip/tear in the white fleshy area. It's really small and hard to tell. I tried to gently move the clam off the rock it's on, but I could tell it was firmly attached. Is there any harm in moving him, or how would I get it to release later to do a FWD if I needed to? Tank parameters as follows: temp 78-80 (chiller) Alk 10.2 dKH Cal 480 Mg 1395 NH4-0 NO2-.025 NO3-.2 PO4-0. Salinity 1.024 . Lighting 3x 250w MH 10k and 2x180w vho actinics. I use activated carbon and a phosban reactor as well as skim 24/7 . Inhabitants 5 bartlett's anthias, 1 yellow tang, 1 atlantic blue tang, 1 kohl tang, 1 target mandarin, 1 sailfin blenny, 2 diamond gobies, 2 blue chromis, 1 red wrasse, hermits, snails, 1 green serpent star, 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 sally lightfoot crab, and I think that's it. thanks, Tim

To do the dip you will need to bag enough RODI water to house the clam, first bag the RODI water and put the bag in the tank or sump to get he water temps evenly matched....then you will adjust the ph with some arm and hammer baking soda...a ph probe makes that job pretty simple...then you place the clam in the tempature/Ph adjusted baggy for 15 to 30 minuits........

I have had some major pinching problems and have diped all mya w dozen clams at least once a week for the last month and a half ....havent lost one yet!

Ill try the new treatment with a anitbiotic some time this week when I manage to get some time off......these 90 plus hour work weeks are killing me...just finding time to cut the grass is a major achievement for me at the moment lol

is adjusting pH necessary? all of my fwd have been only temp adjusted.

I have a 5 gallon bucket which I do water changes with. while water/salt is mixing in the bucket w/ powerhead and heater, I fill a specimen container with ro and float that to match temps. then I put my 6 max's in for 15 minutes. Been doing it this way each week for a little over a month.

waiting to hear more results with the metro before proceeding with it. have it already, just need an additional halide for qt tank.

thanks for the input. i made the mistake of not having a smaller rock for the clam to attach onto to make removal easy, but rather i let him grab directly onto the rock work. how do I get him to let go without doing harm? TIA Tim
