I just bought a 5 gal pail from Wally World to do water changes, there is no info about how safe it's like food grade, etc.I'm concerned about using this and kill by ignorance my tank livestock. Any experienced/suggestions?
Thanks
AJ
Wash it out well, run some RO/DI through it a couple times and then fill it with RO/DI and check the TDS of the RO/DI in the bucket. You can then get an idea if anything is leaching into the water.
Bottom line is it cost a company to have something graded food safe and if it's not needed they don't spend the money. There was an article several years ago on RC where they checked several containers and such to see what leached out. You can probably search and find it. Several plastics do leach some phosphate or the like. Some of the egg crate you get at the home centers do this and cause that nasty red hair algae.
How'd you end up breaking a salt bucket?? You must have superhuman strength. Or it must have been a faulty bucket. I have salt buckets and paint buckets (the exact same thing, just don't get a used paint bucket). You can buy those paint buckets at any hardware store. Work just as well.
