Is this snail guard too small?

I made some PVC snail guards for my JBJ ATO floats. That junk they come with is a joke. However I used 1" PVC and I am debating to go to 1 1/4 PVC because I think the gap around the float is too small. It is about 1.8th of an inch around the edge. I am thinking some slime build up may cause them to fail. Your thoughts?

I upped them one size. They have been working great...

I made a bracket out of acrylic and tie wrapped them to the bracket...
