Is this STN? Why?

Dear All,

A newbie questions , as shown in below photo, is this a STN? My present water parameter as follows;

KH - 10.8 dkh (salifert)
CA - 480 ppm
No3 - 0 ppm
Po4 - 0 ppm
Mg - 1340 ppm
Sp. gr. - 1.025
Ph - 8.1

Please advise, if so , I wonder anything that may cause this STN? Can this coral be save?

I also heard from a friend that I can just cut those turn white portion to prevent spreading out , should I do it this way? Or just leave alone.

Cheers,

MD

First PIC looks like it. Your alk is quite high, could have caused it if it came from a low alk system.

Yes the alkaline of the person sell me are around 8 dkh , but I can not lowered down my dkh , I am using Red Sea coral pro. Should I buy other salt so that on my water change I can reduced the alkalinity ?

Should I cut the white part?

Could be sudden dkh change
Temp sways
Param sways in general
How long has the system been up? Sps coral are never easy there picky and hate change of any kind

That should not be caused by Alk, many many people keep their alk as high as 14 dKH and keep acros with zero issues. I'm not really sure why that is happening.

Cut the good part and try to save it. By some pics I see that you still have polyps but with white skeleton. It could be bleaching. Try lower the frag. What is your lighting ? From what lighting come the frags?

Is this STN? Why?

Thanks for your advises and comments.
I have 2 kessil 360EA running for 6 hours at night @ 70% , yesterday I try to lowered it to about 30-40%.

All I bought it from a seller using ZeoVit system and his Alk is around 8 DKH and using T5 with LEDs.

My other 2 corals that came at the same time seems to be ok;

So , is it lights directly hitting it or its water parameter? Is my No3 and Po4 good to stay 0 ppm? I add sugar once a week to pull down further what my Biopellet does in bringing down No3 and Po4.

Should I buy some new salt with lower alk in my upcoming water change to mixed and lowered the alk? Is this advisable ?

Cheers ,

MD

True but a change of alk levels could. Stable alk levels are very important to SPS health.

A big alk swing could also make sps stn. I bought a green slimer yesterday and today I start have a spot with stn. Sometimes it's a hit or miss. Just frag the dead part away and try to save it. The most important is to keep you alk stable .

I think it is also having sign of RTN too, I wonder if I could still save this one.

Another question, how much time you usually running your lights in a day. I got 2 kessil 360we but I only have it on for 6 hours a day (18:00 to 24:00). I hear it should be more than this?

Will this also causing STN or RTN too?

You have pictures of stn and rtn for sure. Two things come to mind. One being kessils are not very strong and by themselves I've seen a few tanks brown and rtn stn just like this. Second being your levels are really high and when I see this usually people may have mixed their sg too high during a wc. I would grab a bag of reef crystals and get it dialed back.

Your running low nutrient so you may have to keep your alk closer to 8 9 and you also want to turn your kessils on for a lot longer. My leds start at 10 and turn off at 10 with 6 hours of peak power. The pictures look very dim. Sps hate dim lighting.

Recently I had a sick fish that would freak out with high lighting. For one month I had to turn my lighting down to 30 percent. I have maxspect which are much stronger then a single kessil and at 30 percent a week in my sps frags started to brown, a week later stn on bases. I got tired of that broke the tank apart caught the fish and turned the lights up. The corals started to re encrust and now are all beautiful.

Wow, thanks a million , these are valuables suggestions for a SPS newbie like me and others likewise .

I will be doing some adjustment to my Tank;
1) change new salt IO reef crystal in my upcoming water change.
2) I have already stop my calcium reactor and I will removed the Dolomite as I think it added up bicarbonate into the tanks that prompted high alkalinity aside from the already high KH of Red Sea coral pro salt.
3) I have program my apex to have about 15 hours of lights on. Now I have to find way how to set sunrise to sunset mode of my kessil via apex controller. Can anyone help me on this with step by step procedures ? Sorry , I am an old tech person :)
4) now I am thinking is I have to removed or not my Biopellet reactor. Huh it's been a very mind blowing situation , some people suggest me to remove it but I don't want to go back high nutrient life as before , in the past I have been battling against hight No3 of exceeding 50 ppm and high PO4 of over 0.25 ppm. Any suggestion on this to persuade me in either way ?

Hope to hear more !

Is these 2 creatures causing STN to my Corals ? They seems no responding nor affected with my RX Corals Dip.

Looks like a gorilla crab and some people have issues with them some don't. I have a large acro colony and he's been there for awhile and doesn't hurt anything. Highly doubt that's your issue
