Is this Toadstool dying or dead?

I also have a toadstool leather. Mine was in for 3 weeks or so about 3 years back. 2 days before it came back out, I had started target feeding it with food every day in effort to "stimulate" it. Maybe that would help you too. They are really pretty hard to kill though.

You gave your tank parameters, but didn't include magnesium. Leathers need an ample amount of magnesium and that might be the culprite. In the past when my mag was low or on the low side they would close until the levels came back up.
I do not test for Magnesium so I do not know how much I have.

As far as the other posts since my last, I have had it in low flow, high flow and medium flow. No change.

Status for Monday 3/3 - The stalk looks like chunks are missing from it and the patch is getting larger. I will take a picture tonight, but I believe that this guy is a gonner.

As far as nipping on it, I have 5 fish, 2 false percs, 1 sixline, 1 royal gramma and 1 rainfords goby. I have some hermits, a cleaner shrimp, a sally lightfoot crab and 4 emerald crabs. I also have a brittlestar. None of those are coral eaters as far as I know.

last ditch effort, you can try a coral dip.
if chunks are sloughing off, its an infection of some sort and you need to stop it before it spreads. then it can heal over time.

if it starts deteriorating fast, siphon out rotten flesh, and/or remove the leather entirely.

Should I cut the cap off and rubber band it to a rock? (After a Lugol's dip of course)

if its that bad.. i would propagate.
Sorry, not that experienced. i assume you mean cut the cap off and rubberband it to a rock right? Can I glue it?

glue won't work.

in this case, I would keep the cut end exposed to current, or at least not smashed down on a rok with a rubberband. too tight rubberbands will svere the cap too.

are you familiar with gravel bowl method of prop? its most often used for shrooms.

if you cut the cap, clean your razor in dip before cutting. place cut cap in a shallow bowl with some small gravel pieces, then loosely cover bowl with net or similar to keep cutting from blowing away.
place in moderate flow on sandbed. you might need to clean the netting every few days. montior for further signs of deterioration or rot.

you can get a plastic fork and break off a peace and impale it on the stem or in the cap, i do agree with keeping water movement on the stem

OK, been a couple of days. Sorry. Here are the pics.

So to frag...
1) cut the cap off above the point where the tissue is sloughing off
2) dip in lugols
3) put in a cup with netting as a lid
4) hope

Is that right? Is it too far gone?

it doesn't look too bad. has it detriorated more?

I've seen way worse recover over time.

if its no worse than your pics, I'd try just dip now, and hold off on drastic fragging.

fragging a dyeing coral is a last resort, and I don't think you are to that point yet.

Thanks!

So my Lugols says to mix and submerge for 15-20 minutes.

Would you suggest that?

I used the dip instructions for Lugols. 40 drops per gallon. I dipped the coral for 20 minutes and now it is back in the tank.

Let's hope it gets happy.

J

good luck, i'm intrested mine's been closed for a while now and before it only closed when something got on it so i'm bum viewing your thread, hope everything goes well, i'm watching keep posted

Soooo... anybody know how this turned out? Mine is starting to look like this guys and I've been moving it around the tank to get more/less light then more/less flow to see if I can get it to come back out.

Any verification on whether or not Magnesium shortage could be the culprit?
