Is your water source currently affecting your tank?

I got a voice message from the city of Roseville regarding their switch to ground water starting January 27th due to the impending drought. I had my RODI replacement scheduled in mid February and was unaware of the change in water source. To make the long story short, I had experienced a bit of an increase in green algae and had 2 corals stn. I had since replaced all of my rodi membranes and resin and everything are back on top. I now use a refillable cartridge with catalytic carbon, 2 carbon blocks and a 5micron sediment filter. My sediment filter appears exhausted already and it is only the beginning of March.

Just wondering if anybody else has noticed the decline in water quality in our area. Is it affecting your tank? I so not trust ground water.....

Man due to the drought they raised my water price so it's forcing me to downsize ... So I feel your pain .... But back on point I suggest a prefilter before the rodi

Yup. I agree. I replaced my sediment filter last night. It has only been mid February since it was last replaced. Already exhausted. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1393979056.358492.jpg

Just checked my RODI meter 426 tds in and 0 out. This is appreciably larger than what I was recording last year and is at the extreme edge of water quality for our water system. I completely changed my filters in December and they are still working well. It does appear that I will need to change my 5 micron filter within the next month.
I did talk to the water quality folks at the Roseville water department earlier this year and was told to expect some water quality change when they started using wells.
I live in West Roseville so I might be supplied from a different well than you.

Just a heads up but went to a lfs and was looking for Rodi water. I asked if they test their water. They said no, so I asked them to test before I buy. It tested at 160ppm! I did not purchase the water. Went to another lfs and their water was 15ppm. Just FYI...

I will check the tap water Tds in my house. It was 44 before the switch. I am just going to assume the initial switch had disturbed sediments. I am in the Crocker ranch area.

Just checked my TDS meter and I'm coming in at 29 TDS I'm near Rocky ridge and Cirby way.
That's lower than normal normally it's around 32.

160 WoW I could only guess where lol

I just checked mine, normally around 30 its 145+ from the tap

Man, that's crazy high coming from Orangevale? I just checked the tds in the outside faucet. Mine is at 39. Must have gotten cleaner lately. Then again it has been a month since the switch in water source.

I checked tap at 165. I live in Sacramento on the Rancho Cordova border. Glad I changed the filters about 4 weeks ago.

Normally 32 - 35 here in Roseville off of Blue Oaks / Foothills area. Just measured, and it came in at 68 TDS.

I think our membranes will hold up as long as they are being back washed. If u don't have a backwash kit I suggest you add one. I am back washing every 50 gals and have seen an increase in performance and filter life. .

I have a backwash in my typhoon iii rodi unit. I think it is just the initial switch in water source that had stirred up so much sediments. Looking good now. Will flush the membrane ocassionally.

OK. I'm the ignorant one here. What do you guys mean by backwash? I have a AWI Typhoon III also. Is it the bypass that you guys are talking about? If it is, I usually run that for several minutes to get the TDI to drop down to 8-9 (from the TDI from TAP at 32-40) before actually "making water".

Or is there something I may be missing?

It's the black lever. You bypass the membrane and di resin to rinse out the sediment and carbon block. It just flushes particles so the water reaching your ro membrane and di resin does not have particulates.
