Issue w/ Tunze 6100

I came home today with my alarm sounding on one of the pumps (have 2 x 6100's). I opened it up and did not see anything out of the ordinary (snails, calcium build-up, etc.). I also just cleaned it about a few months ago (vinegar soak). I coudn't figure it out so I swapped impellars. The swap made the other pump's alarm sound... what the heck? I compared the two impellars side by side and they did not look any different. I then swapped the "good" impellar w/ the non working stream and the alarm sounded again. Can't figure out what the problem is. Any suggestions? I'm soaking it again in vinegar to see if I can remove the bottom bushing since it seems to be stuck and possibly causing the alarm and keeping it from spinning freely. I also have the newer one piece impellers FYI. Any advice would be great!

Thanks,

Minh

The stuck upper bearing is the culprit, if the drive unit has to drag the bearing the resistance raises the wattage and sets off the alarm. The only other possibility is a cracked magnet. Soak it for a while to soften it up and then slowly work around the bearing with a slotted screwdriver to pry the bearing off, you want to pry gently, and at several points working around the drive unit.

Roger,

Thanks for the quick response. However, I've removed everything that I can according to your posting after an all day vinegar soak and it's still setting the alarm. Every bit is free and clear as I can see. Please advise.

Roger,

This is the type of exceptional customer service that does not make me ever hesitate to buy Tunze products regardless of the price tag :D. I will package and send it out shortly.

By the way, a while back I had a problem with my 7095 controller and we had discussed it. It had a bad moonlight led and you wanted me to send it in but I learned to deal with it since it was not a big deal (was also busy with a new baby :D ). Since I'm sending in the stream I figured I should send this unit in as well. Is that alright?

Thanks,

Minh

Yes, I will have to hope I get more moonlights before your repair arrives but if not I will return the pump ASAP and I should get a couple moonlights in soon.

Yes, we repaired it yesterday and sent it back, you needed a new motor and a new photocell/LED assembly.

Wow... thanks a lot. Any reason that you saw for the premature failure? Is this something I should expect from my other stream?

Thanks,

Minh

The cord was damaged but this was a manufacturing defect it had pulled away at the motor because it wasn't sealed perfectly. This is not a common defect.

Roger,

Thanks so much for the repaired units. Got them this Friday and they're back up!

For those out there that are on the fence regarding Tunze's. Don't be.. with customer service like this there is no other choice for me! I'm a Tunze fan for life!

Thanks again Roger!
