It is Winter time AND cheap Calcium time.

I was out getting Calcium Chloride for the two part additive. With the weather turning cold I hoped to find Prestone's Driveway Heat. Lowe's told me they didn't think they would carry it this year because they switched to a different non sodium chloride deicing product.

Home Depot did have it. They placed it in front of one of the cash registers since ice and snow is expected tonight.

If you do use Driveway Heat, Remember it is nearly 100% Calcium Chloride which is 20% purer than Dowflake and you have to reduce the amount of Driveway Heat in the recipe by 20%

In case you don't know about the additives check out

Thanks for the link Russ, the link I had been using was much older and did not contain the newer information. Great Post.

Very nice info, thanks. I already have my ALK supplement made up but was in need of ingredients for the CA supplement. I think it going to be a trip to home depot today!

Thanks for the timely post, Russ!

And to all, buy extra and use it on your driveway, too! :)

Just a note from my pavement background, the majority of ice melts have a detrimental effect on concrete. Mostly you'll experience spauling (top layer flaking off). I was in the overlay business, so ice melt helped me out quite a bit. Little tip from your friendly neighborhood ex-contractor.

Man, I sent jess to home depot for some of that while I was at work, and she came home with just plain old sodium something or other. I told her the brand. She honestly thought i was thinking about the driveway, lol, had to inform her that i wanted stuff for the aquarium. And the look I got for saying that, wheewwww, almost makes me glad to be at work right now so i don't have to see it again.
