as you go through this, keep in mind that i was fortunate enough to catch this before leaving for a trip tomorrow.

Ive had this new-to-me tank setup running for about 2 weeks now and all was good until around midnight tonight. i was about to do my midnight data logging and noticed the bottom of my stand was covered in water.
first thought: (censored)
second thought: must be the plumbing leaking. found a little salt at the drain bulkhead, but no moisture at all.
Second thought: water spray - definitely not. At this point, i came to the conclusion that it was definitely NOT the main tank - thank goodness
Third thought: Must be the sump.
and that was it. this second hand sump i had was leaking somewhere. it was just a matter of finding where.
- Bulkheads: no leaks.
- Skimmer: no way - it shouldnt have even gotten consideration
- at this point i remembered that the previous owner of the sump (modded uniquarium) had drilled the bottom. drained what i could with my util pump, pulled all the rubble out of the rear chamber and checked the sealed hole: OF COURSE IT WAS DRY UNDERNEATH
- at a loss for words i sat on the floor and stared at the sump wondering what it was. i decided to clean up the water a little when i found it. the joint between the wall and the bottom of the tank had somehow failed in the return section and had a pinhole leak going. This is after several days of leak-testing the tank. and visually inspecting the joints. i wiped off the water on the outside of the joint, waited a second and sure enough, there was another bead of water soon after. (insert profanity here)

at that point i decided i had to get that sump out of the stand so that i could avoid stand damage and inspect the WHOLE sump for leaks or to decide its junk. of course, the rear brace was in the way and the display was still full. so i undid the brackets i had installed and wiggled it until it was just barely out of the way while still holding the tank up. So on the way out the stand knocked the center brace out and the rest of the stand started creaking. i pulled the sump out as fast as possible and proceeded to get the center brace back in place. with the weight of the 100 gal tank, ~150lbs rock and the water to fill the tank on my back. i lifted it enough to slide the brace back into place.

from there i dried off what i could in the stand, threw my fans in there to help with the drying and sat down to figure out what i could do for the week i would be gone. i ended up throwing together a rubbermaidmicrobubblefactoryfuge. plumbed it, filled it and now im here.

at this point...im just glad it happened tonight before leaving for a week. pics will follow tomorrow.

Long day.

That sucks, I feel your pain. I have had my share of, how did this water get there episodes.

*knows on wood* *rubs his rabbits foot* *rubs my lucky penny* *Adjusts my horse shoe* *feeds my lady bugs* *waters my 4 leaf clovers*

I seem to have most of my problems behind me now :-)

WOW! That normally happens the day after you leave on an extended trip. Good luck that you got it before you left. Now go have some fun and don't think about it!

I hope you have someone to check your tank while you are gone.
If you are anywhere near Garden Grove, I'd be happy to help you out. If not, please have a relative or someone visually check every few days at least. Best to leave an emergency contact phone number of someone you trust, even if they don't live close, (that should be irrelevent in the event of an emergency) They could spell the difference between a minor inconvienience and a complete disaster.

good luck!
Kevin

I had the same experience about 2 months ago...fill the tank with sand, rock and water, then fill the sump.

It's starting to leak, godammit...I have to drain the sump and tank, move the whole thing out, and resealed the sump...talk about frustration...

Sorry to hear about your mishaps, but if it helps any, I have a similar story with used equipment.

2 years ago, I was awaken at 2:00AM to the sound of water running. More like a waterfall splashing sound. I ran downstairs and saw the front and side panel of the tank split down to about 4 inches left holding them together. This was a 150g tank, as you can imagine by this time, all the water has spilled all over the carpets and floors.

I did my best to unplug all the wiring underneath, lucky for me, the equipment was not damage. Somehow the water did not cause a surge in the electrical or else I would have been standing on a puddle of water waiting for the man to come for me.

I took out all the corals in the empty tank and placed them in the sump. Got a few big buckets and got out everything I could. Took out all the fishes. At this time, I wasn't thinking about the water damage that has taken place. All that matters was getting the livestock to safety since I had invested a lot in it.

I didn't finish cleaning up the tank until 6AM, took a 15 minutes nap. I waited til 8AM to call a friend next door to have him keep a few of my corals. I went to Home Depot and picked up 4 amigos to help me get rid of the tank. At this point, I don't want anything to do with the tank, the stand and whatever came with it. I guess you can call me supersticious.

When the LFS opened up, I went and picked out the 150g that they had there. The used tank at this point was sitting on the corner of the street for free pickup. Surprisingly enough, there was this guy that came and hauled it away. Including the maple stand and canopy.

I took the day off from work, by the time I was done with the tank, it was 12:30AM the next day. I got 15 minutes of sleep and 2 slices of pizza up until then. Once the tank was up, I started to access the water damage, the foul smell was horrible. But I didn't care, I was too tired to worry about it. I went to bed instead.

Here's the savings I get from buying a used tank.

$800 used tank

$1,000 for new tank & equipments
$800 for new carpets
$4.25(minimum wage) X 8 = Loss of wages :D
$300 loss of corals and fishes
$120 for the 4 amigos

An entire day of pain and suffering, priceless.

I bought a used aquarium 60 gal for use as a sump, tested it before I bought it to make sure that it didnt leak...

Got it home, added baffles, noticed a few weak spots, I cut small pieces of acrylic and welded them in with wo #16, I also checked all seams, and put more weld on there, and tested again....

It's been running for over a year with no problems! :)

thanks for the feedback guys. looks like ill be running the tupperfuge for the next week or so until i either find something else, decide to gamble and reinforce this busted sump (it is only a small trickle now but i dont even want to think about what it might be like later) or just baffle up my 50gal glass old setup since basically everything has sold except for the tank itself. im leaning that way since i need to break it down before i leave tonight anyway and i can get baffles cut locally. the week out should be sufficient time for the silicon to cure.
