i have recently finished cycling my tank, all levels are perfect, but i have a green nuisence algea, hair algea i think and its everywhere up to 2ft long in some places!, my ozone has slowed its growth but i still want to get rid of it, what should i do?

cheers, adrian.

I would cut back on lighting the tank to a few hours(3 or 4) day.
I would do a waterchange.
What type of water are you using?
Do you have a skimmer?
I would check for Nitrates, Phosphates. Maybe use a sponge to soak them up.
Do you have crushed coral?

Rain water?
The only problem with algae and phosphate is the algae can be absorbing the phosphate which will make the test come back inconclusive.

It is normal to have algae outbreaks andblooms after a cycle but not like what you are describing.

I wouldnt use rain water, I am not sure about the rain you getin Australia but here in the North East we have acid rain and pollutants.
The rain water could be the whole problem.

run the nitrate and phosphate test on the rain water you are using. if you are collecting it in a rain barrel, there could be all sorts of dead critters in there. as for the 2 foot long HA, start pulling it out and keep at it every day

I had a real bad green hair algae problem previously, I added Phosban to the filtration system in a mesh bag, and did water changes with filterd sea water, not more hair algae, now I only use RO water and the filtered seawater and voila! hope this helps.

:eek1: I'm going through the same problem myself. It seems like I woke up one morning and my tank was covered with green hair algae. I went to the extreme of scrubbing my live rock and doing a 50% water change (along with my weekly water changes). And I have the horror of seeing it taking my tank over again. I can't seem to find my problem that causing the algae.

It gets really discouraging and of course makes the tank look horrible. I don't use rain water though, so that may be your problem. From all the advice that I've been given first, you have to figure out what is causing the outbreak before you can begin to get rid of it because if you don't it will come right back. Which is where I'm at.
