It's Time ......

Ok everyone I think this Saturday is the day. Noon arrival sounds good. I'm hoping to find a buyer for the rock by then but if not I can run it in a rubbermaid tub. Everyone who had equipment on reserve can show up saturday too. I would show up a bit late unless you want to get wet. Please bring insulated boxes for your stuff if you have them, I have aprox 5 small to med sized ones to use as well.

Paul, I can bring by a couple of boxes tomorrow. I won't be able to come on Saturday to get my stuff, how about Monday??

Paul... I will take one of the clams.... since I havent seen them... can you set aside a pretty one for me. I prefer the bright blue ones. I am not sure about Saturday pickup as I am still out of town with my mom and her injury. I may have to send hubby again. If my big tank was ready I would take a few more things off your hands but my little tank is getting pretty full!

Seachel - the clam I have left is a pretty big one, if you have the room and are lighting with metal halide it's yours.

my small tank has metal halide.... i was planning to put it in the big tank at some point.... it has T5 lighting.... is that not good enough? How big is big.... will it work in my 29 gallon or is that too small of a tank.

Yeah thats fine just wanting to make sure it would be fed with the correct lighting.

Anyone need some like rock or clown pairs? Now's the time to jump on a couple pairs that will live in the tank together ! :)

Michelle / Epon,

I'm not convinced 4 - 54 watt bulbs on a 72 gallon bow is enough lighting for a clam. I didn't think that lighting fixure had individual reflectors either. Do they?

This coincidentally may work in my favor, but ... That T5 unit didn't have individual reflectors and two of the tubes were actinics. I wouldn't feel confident that would be enough light for a Crocea. Assuming your water chemistry is good in your 29 and you dose calcium, the Crocea would be fine in there, but you should increase your photocycle. I wouldn't feel confident with only 4 hours of halides and the sunlight that it gets would have little benefit since it is shining in the side and not from above. I would have voiced this same opinion even if I didn't want the clam ;)

Michelle doesn't have a solid understanding of dosing yet. She just got the test kits at IMAC, and needs more experience before jumping into a clam IMO.

I also believe that 29 is a little over stocked ATM, especially with the skimmer she is using. I would also test the new photoperiod and make sure you are not over heating the tank before adding a clam.

Also, since she has had a large amount of die off on that new LR she just got, I don't recommend transferring any livestock over to the new 72 for a while in order to reduce the livestock in her 29. That tank needs to cycle, and the LR will need to cure. I just don’t see this as a good idea for a while. Its just not worth risking the life of the clam. Sorry Michelle!

Saltyseaman, I haven't forgotten to get those pics for you, just need to get some things moved in the garage before I can get decent pics, and I need my husband to do that for me.

I guess the clam goes to saltyseaman? Is that ok with seachel71 ?

Here's the remaining livestock:

Mix of hirocks, fiji, kaelini aprox 300lbs 2/lb

Pair of Skunk Clowns 30
Pair of False Perc Clowns 30

LPS
Fungia M 15
Fungia L 40

Softy
Mint Green Nepthea has a few blue shrooms on the rock 20
Pink PomPom Xenia rock (skunks hosting in it) 25
frag rocks of xenia 3 each

I'm pretty motivated to get this stuff moved out. I suppose I could find lfs homes for them or ship but I prefer not to.

I may be wrong, but I don't think it will take seachel's tank that long to cycle, probably less than a week, but to determine this for sure is just to check the water parameters. If there is no ammonia, nitrite, or nitrates, the tank should be cycled and ready. The live rock doesn't need to cure...it was already cured and alive, the bacteria would just need to multiply enough to handle the excess nutrients in the water, which the bacteria multiply quite fast and this would be done within a day or so. As far as lighting, there are several people who keep SPS under T-5 lights. It is not the amount of wattage into the tank, but rather the available PAR. I would imagine the lighting would be enough for the clam and if it was in question she could always position the clam up near the top of the water column. I kept my first clam under PC lighting and it not only survived but grew.

As far as dosing...it is definitely not rocket science and using test kits...makes it pretty easy.

I'm sure she could have figured these things out. Just my thoughts.

Michelle added a bunch of new sand to the tank. The rock was cured when she got it. However, it stunk up the whole house a few days later and she was finding dead worms and mushrooms. I would have to guess there are more dead critters inside the rock. I personally would cure it. Definately keep monitoring the water parameters, and be prepared for water changes.

I am keeping SPS under T-5 lighing, so yes it can be done. I also have individual reflectors, a shorter tank, and more bulbs. I wouldn't hesitate to keep a clam in there.

If someone is willing to temporarily take the clam until Michelle got things ready to go, I believe she could keep the clam in the 29.

Dosing is not rocket science, but does need to be done. I had planned to go over it with Michelle, but it got too late and we were both beat. If anyone local is willing to go over this, I'm sure it would be a big help.
