hey,
this is my first mantis i've ever had. he's a peacock mantis.
the tank he's in is a 30 gallon thats connected to my main 125g reef.. the glass is not very thick (1/4") im sure he could break it if he wanted to. also in the tank with him i have a long spined black urchin and i keep a couple chocolate chip stars that i am waiting for the legs to grow back cos i feed them to the harlequins in the main tank.. been thinking of also putting a dwarf lion fish in with the mantis as he seems to be very docile.
he seems to just like to hangout in his cave i made him and look out at me. i've only heard him click a few times when i first put him in the tank and he was cleaning off some calcium tubes inside his cave.. i made his cave by taking the end cap off a Aqua Clear Quick Filter Power Head Attachment and piling dead coral skeletons ontop.
i have a small hermit crab and small snail in with him but he doesnt seem to want to eat them.. he has been eating the clam meat i give to him once a day.. i tried to give him a shrimp from my chinese food but he didnt want it (probably because it was cooked)
I would like to make some puzzles for him to get his food.. i read about mantis' being able to open elastic bands from containers for food and stuff.. but i cant really think of anything good yet. i'd like for him to develop a mind to solve puzzles.
anyway.. im going to post some links to vid's i've made so far of him..
oh yea.. i know this is not smart at all.. i have a big mirror on the back side of the tank.. in one video i think he see's his reflection.. but he didnt attack the glass or anything. he seems to be ok with his own reflection.
also, i have a UV light with some florescent green boxes ontop that glow. i turn that light on at night for some eye candy for him since his eyes can see UV and all sorts of cool colors. i have a video of that too that i'll link.
this one that shows me feeding him... he looks right at my hand after taking the meat.. eventually i'd like to make a vid of him taking the _clam_ meat from my hand
feeding jack
uv lights i turn on at night
Jack putting a rock on a snail
seeing his reflection in the mirror
cool tail colors
his cool tail colors
