January Frag Swap!

Ok, so I volunteered to have the next frag swap at my place. We all decided to do it after the holidays, in January. Post here so we can decide on an exact date, any day is fine with me. I'll just take the day off.

I'm going to have a lot more available than just zoos like I had today. I'm going to read up on how to frag some of my acans, hydnophora, plate coral, and whatever else I have that can be fragged.

I live on the northwest side of town in Tucson (Cortaro/Old Father area). I know January is kind of far off, but if we all start to cut up our corals now we'll have some good stuff to bring! :)

I had a great time today, and I can't wait until the next swap!
 
Sounds great....

I will be fragging just about all my SPS and Monty's so they should be in great shape for the swap. I will also have Blasto's in a variety of colors.
 
It was great to meet all of you. I got my purchases into my tank late last night. So far I think they are all doing well. I guess I will know for sure in a few days.

I am looking forward to the next meet. Maybe by then I will be in a real house with my big tank set up. Who knows.

Adam, those PPE are friggin awesome! Very vibrant skirt and deep purple center with a glowing green mouth. Need to work on some pics.

Wierd thing is that I lost four or five small zoo colonies in the last two days. It looks like they wer being eaten by something. It is very strange. I lost the pinks I got from Adam and Vince. I moved four small frags to the nano for recovery, but we shall see if they survive.
 
I can probably make it to a Jan one. I'll bring half my colony of hydnophora. :lol:

Did you find the cause of the zoa's death? I did a Fresh water dip when I got them and one 2 days before the swap, I can have some more in for you in a week or so.
 
No. I FW dipped too with pH adjustment. I removed the bad stuff today and scraped off the sying tissue. It maybe a fungus. So, I salvaged what I could and dipped them in TMPCC. Not sure I will get lucky.

I'm leaning towards a fungus causing the problem, or something massive eating them. The loss of tissue was rapid and it also involved three colonies that I fragged for the event. Those colonies are almost gone now. That is the thing I hate about fragging. There is always a risk that the damge involved will give opportunity for infections to set in. It certainly discourages me from wanting to frag stuff.

Do you dip your colonies before putting them back into the tank. Maybe I will start doing this.
 
So which zoos survived? I hope the PPE's! They're the ones that I hated cutting up the most. You are right about the color though. The purple is so deep and the green is so intense.

I have an orange plate coral that I am seriously thinking about fragging, but it is such a nice piece! What do you all think? I have read that if you cut it like a pizza all pieces will grow back to an entire plate. I was just going to cut it in half and hope for 2.

I still need to get my calcium reactor tuned in right before the next swap, any of you guys good with them? Let me know, I really need to get it going.

Blasto's sound great, I really like the purple and green ones, I need more color in my tank :)

By the way, everything that I got from the swap is doing awesome. I didn't dip anything. I just acclimated it and dropped it in the tank.
 
The PPE are fine. All of the pinks are looking poor or dead. I got about 5 or six of them. I also had some of my own that were not doing well. It makes me more liely to think that it was a fungal infection since so many different pieces were affected.

Adam, I will send you the ca calculator. Follow the directions and you should be good.

I live Shannon and O.G. area, PM your phone number and we can hook up. Do you have 4 and 10 pH cal solutions, and a pH pen?
 
Can't wait for the next swap. I had the same problem with the pink zoos after i got them home. Fortunately, only the pink zoos and a xenia seem to be suffering. At first I thought that it was because I had them all in one container with a monti frag that had damaged them. Now I'm starting to think that it's some disease too. Oh well, at least it gives me one more excuse to go to the next frag swap :)
 
It could be you mixed frags, SPS will sting and softies will put out chems to keep other species out of their AO. In a small container that can be deadly
