JapanReef - 450 gallon In-Wall system

So got the new Regal. The water in teh bag was 1.027 and my QT is at 1.020 so I'm going to drip acclimatise for 12 hours or so. Awesome fish. My new favourite!

Hey man, that's not Reef SAFE!   Just kidding of course!

Nice looking fish...hope it acclimates well.

Well, my zoos might be toast but he's been in captivity over a month probably and will be in QT for another month so maybe he can forget his natural diet. They don't particularly nibble on SPS so hopefully all will be well....

I'm a little bit concerned though. It's been in the bucket for 4 hours and dropped tp 1.023. It has enough water to swim upright but spends most of its time swimming on its side.

That is somewhat common. Are you standing over the bucket when it is doing this? Alot of fish go to their sides to get a better view of what is going on up top. Like if the new owner is getting ready to net them. :)

He went in the 50g QT a few hours ago and he's swimming the right way up. :p

He is picking at the tank and nosing around so outlook looks bright. The 2 Heniochus are really curious. These two little guys are so funny the way they swim around the tank together.

Yeah they lay on their sides often when under stress. It may actually be "playing dead" but I am not sure about that. Maybe it is to get a better view.

Well, it's still alive. Getting a fish through the first 24 hours is always the scariest part for me and this is the most I've ever paid for a fish ($140). It has taken up residence in a 1.5" pipe and isn't venturing out this morning. It's not like he's being bullied as he's the biggest fish in QT. In there with 2 sleeper gobies, the heniochus pair and a tiny yellow coris. When he goes in the main tank he'll be a similar size to the Yellow Tang and PBT so I'm sure he'll be able to hold his own.

yeah the pipe works great. It will come out when it's hungry and when it gets used to you. Imagine the transition from reef to glass box...can't be easy.

He's out and about now so next stage is getting him to eat. I'm starting the drop into hypo today. :)

I don't remember a 4 day absence from you ever before.

Hope you are ok and everything's alright Laurence.

Just a silent reader who needs his daily fix of JapanReef ;)

Cheers!

Hey Alfonso, all is well. My QT is now officially in hypo with the Regal Angel, Yellow Coris Wrasse, Heniochus pair and 2 sleeper gobies. All appear to be eating well. The Regal isn't really taking to flake or other prepared foods but is nibbling on nori. I also pulled an algae infested rock out the sump and placed it in there and it's been nibbling on that so I have high hopes for it.

Main tank is doing well. I moved the LTA a bit towards the left of the island to make way for corals. I got 3 corals with the Regal last week and the pink acro doesn't look anything like the picture on the site. Maybe it will colour up at some point. The monti is a dark red rather than pink but it's nice.

I have to get a chiller this month as backup which is making me wince a bit. I'm all paid up on the new Vortech pumps so waiting for them now. They might ship out next week so we'll see....Chiller and those pumps will be a big step in this project.

Next on the list is a Calcium reactor but I'm not worrying about this too much. At the moment Kalk and a small cup of B-Ionic in the RODI auto top-off container is maining levels. I have to top it off every 2-3 days depending on how wet I run the skimmer so every time I refill I add a cup of B-Ionic and shake the Kalk bottle.

I'm also trying to hold myself back from buying more corals. Jury's out on whether I withstand the withdrawal. :p

Good to hear everything's alright. Can't wait to see all those fish in your system. Thanks for answering so soon.

Cheers!

I recently shipped 5 gel marine batteries to a customer in Japan... sent them through the US Mail!

I am going shrimping on the Hood Canal today...yuuuummy! Should I eat them in front of the tank? :D

Have a major project looming - probably next month but would like some advice. I'm going to be installing a chiller which will be outside. I'm going to take the opportunity to install a remote DSB outside and have it all on teh same loop. Will only be a few feet from the sump, through the wall to the chiller or RDSB. My question is...where do I put the pump? If you use the same logic as the pump between sump and tank then the pump would be after the chiller and RDSB...except with this setup we don't have gravity to assist.

So...options:

1) SUMP > PUMP > CHILLER > RDSB > SUMP
2) SUMP > CHILLER > PUMP > RDSB > SUMP
3) SUMP > CHILLER > RDSB > PUMP > SUMP

And then with Chiller and RDSB reversed with RDSB before thevChuller:

4) SUMP > PUMP > RDSB > CHILLER > SUMP
5) SUMP > RDSB > PUMP > CHILLER > SUMP
6) SUMP > RDSB > CHILLER > PUMP > SUMP

What's the logical choice? :)
