JapanReef - 450 gallon In-Wall system

I think the Clarkii will be ok with the Haddoni but be carefull with that one. It´s a know serial killer (or serial eater...). A friend of mine lost 4 out of his 8 fishes as expensive meals of that anemona. The last one was a 4" Paracanthurus hepatus (hippo tang ?)

There have been a few of these in Tokyo recently and in very good nick as well.

The pic you have are from a place we both know and are Gigantea not Haddoni. At least they were last week although Natural has recently had a shipment of Blue Haddoni, but more pale blue.

I'd get one like a shot if I were you. They very rarely come in in this colour and in this condition and did I mention the price!! Too good to be true.

I was down at PAU PAU in Ginza lunchtime and observed them unpacking this week's shipment of anemones. Absolute rubbish and so overpriced.

These Gigantea have got to be one of the best buys around at the moment.

Best stop now before I talk myself into buying one.

Just my opinion, but the Purple Gigantea are far better in person. This shop have them at 25cm and the same price as the 15cm blues. I saw a very genki purple Gigantea today at PAU PAU (spitting image of this shop's) but was going for 47,250 yen.

The purples at your place are a real bargain.

Maybe I'll restart my big cube.............

Joao, I know these can kill but with hosted clowns the risk is acceptable. The hosted fish will chase away anything that comes near. Also, it will be right over on the right side.

grallster - yep, it's happening. I'm actually in the middle of a 100g water change. Turned return pump off and cleaned out the fuge and filled it up. Just about to do the prop section next to it but taking an RC break. :)

Also that macro should help - arrives Sunday and then with my denitrator...I'll have it beat for good. :)
 
Ahhhhh.

I thought you were looking at B-Box. That's where I saw them. If it's from Bora Bora then it's probably brown and when it arrives and you complain the shop owner will tell you it's a problem with your lighting!! At least that's what happened to me.

Seriously though these are available from B-Box for 12800 yen at the mo and ara fab.

I'm 100 percent certain that the ones I saw were Stichodactyla Gigantea. The tentacles are very different in shape to Haddoni and easy to tell apart in person, although for photos is more difficult.

I've not seen carpets of this quality/colour for a couple of years.

Bottom row of pics are all gigantea (green on left, blue middle and purple on the right). These are sold as Hatagoisoginchaku in Japan (Isoginchaku meaning anemone). The first row far right is a green Haddoni, Ebohatagosioginchakeu in Japanese.

Bottom right is an absolute beaut and could do well in you tank with that space.

Hi Lawrence. Cross posting.

If you click on the tab I sent you scroll down to the large grey box where the pics start appearing. The first sentence in blue will give you two tab options, click the second which is Midoriishii. On the Pics you will see that they currently have pink Fiji Birdsnest for 8800. Not seen this anywhere else in Tokyo for a long time and certainly not this colour. It really is this pink. B-Box do not photoshop.

If you can't navigate to the pics drop me a line and I will try to explain better.

I gave up on B-Box because the site is so bad and page I did find with SPS was 3 years old. So if you can find any pages selling SPS please let me know.

I'll take either of those. I think BoraBora prolly got theirs from the same vendor. They are call them Hatago.

Sweet, now I finally found B-Box's real fish section. :)

I have 20 fish now once the 2 in QT go in need to think of what's next. I've got many of the fish I've always wanted - just a clown tang left really. Thinking about maybe a pair of triggers or something...
 
Hi Lawrence. Hatago in Japanese equates to Carpet in English (at least as far as anemones are concerned).

Pleased you like the link. B-Box's website is a maze with all those redundant pages etc.

If you have any q's about their site, just drop me a line as I think I've worked it out now. Basically use the page I sent to access news on corals and Acros and fish and anemones at the bottom of the page by clicking on the barcodes.

Looking at Bora Bora's site really P's me off. I've been there numerous times and I can safely say that nearly everything on the website is photoshopped (even down to the damsels and Caulerpa for goodness sake!). Indeed some are done so badly that it looks like my 6 year-old took some coloured crayons to the pics. Very dishonest.

One word of advice, the Purlple or Blue carpets will not be around for long, nor will the Birds Nest so if you like the look of them..... This shop sells out fast and has a huge catchment area for customers.

In case I haven't said so before, B-Box is committed to sustaianable use of resources and only stocks farmed Acros/SPS. Similarly they are one of the few shops that actually seem to take an interest in how/where their livestock is collected. But then you'll be familiar with the way things work here for livestock and thats a whole different thread.

Wow, a flurry of posts! Listen Dog, before you buy anymore anemones, you have GOT to check out a purple LTA. Those things are totally sweet and I think much less dangerous than a carpet.

Be careful with the caulerpa. It is tough to eradicate to say the least so try not to let it get into your display. I have it in mine and I am beginning to wish I didn't. Also, very long light periods are a good idea. I keep mine on 24/7 except for 3 one hour breaks designed to keep the nuisance algae in check.
 
Unfortunatley there is no link to the tank.

B-Box site says it is a tank full of Fiji corals. THe Fiji corals that B-Box stock are amazing (no need to photoshop at all here). I'd get someone to give them a call and see if they can send you pics and prices direct to your email.

If not, any spurious reasons for a business trip/holiday to Tokyo and you and I can go shopping???

I asked them a few months ago to send me some pics but they said they wouldn't do that. Maybe I can try again. Get them to send me the pic, circle the ones I want and send you up there. :)

I would come up to Tokyo but it's been a bit hectic lately. Had the Thailand trip, and I have to go to Spain in September for a friend's wedding.

jnarowe - I'd really like a carpet. Been thinking about it for ages but just haven't seen any in Japan and now suddenly they are here. No worries on the caulerpa. I chuck some in the display sometimes as a treat for the tangs and angels. ;)
 
With my large water change which also included draining the fuge section of the sump which was pretty hideous. Also some heavy skimming and reduced feeding, my nitrate level is down to 10-15 so the war is being won. :)

I ended up ordering the blue Carpet from BoraBora as B-Box was sold out (Matt forgive me :D). I did order a pink BirdNest from B-Box but I don't think I'll order from there again - online anyway. The site is a mess, they don't keep it updated and the guy said the birdnest looked different from the photo so I have no idea what is coming really. Cheap though. BoraBora (the photoshoppers) have some large ones in but twice the price.

Still not happy with many things.

1) Microbubbles - aaaaarrrrgh.
2) Heat Issues - need a chiller
3) Flow (Vortech Issues) - one keeps switching off.
4) Stand is rusting - :(
5) Lighting (want to switch to 20k)
6) Skimmer performance

Yep, my stand is rusting because they did such a crap job. I wonder how long I have before the surface rust starts eating away inside?

The plumbing needs to be completely redone to eliminate the microbubbles. Need to order more parts and spend a few days on that. Heat issue easily fixd by throwing X amounts of cash at it. Stand rusting makes me s angry. I tried to explain what powder coating was but all I got was vacant stares. So it was just painted.

Ever since I switched teh skimmer to gravity feed I think performance is worse. I can sit there and sometimes see the level in the riser alternating by 5 inches every 20 seconds - sucks.

Actually I don't think there's any aspect of the tank that I'm happy with. :p Not enough space makes it all hard too.

Ah well, I knew it wasn't going to be easy. This is really a learning tank anyway......

That's really bizarre. The level in my gravity fed skimmer is amazingly constant. Can you think of any reason why your plumbing's feed rate or outflow rate would fluctuate?

Still, glad to hear that you nitrates are coming down. The fact that you're seeing nitrates makes me wonder if your skimmer is underperforming. I haven't seen measurable nitrates since setting my tank up, and you have the better skimmer....
 
Yeah I am still struggling with the Vortechs too. They seem to be running OK but sometimes one or two will rattle. I am a big fan of the concept but I think there were material changes in the production models that make them not work as well as the betas.

About the stand: I would suggest that you strip it and apply marine paint designed for the type of metal you have. Otherwise you will hate that thing for years.

Still with the micro bubbles? That must have you in orbit. If you put socks on everything does it go away?
 
Well, it's baffling me really. It's constant sometimes and then it fluctuates.

I can get really depressed when I think of all the issues but then I look at the tank it does look nice - but I do want perfection. I'll just keep plodding on but I reckon in a year or so I'll prolly tear it down and start again.

It is important that you figure out the source of the microbubbles, so you can focus on that particular part of the plumbing. If you redo all the plumbing, you'll never know where the problem was. And what if you fix the one problem spot, but create a new one in a different area?

What was so gross about cleaning out the refugium section? Just wondering, since the plants were gone. Was the sand fouled up?

If the water level in your skimmer varies, then your Durso drainline isn't set up properly. The skimmer is being run as recirculating, correct? That means the water drains directly into the skimmer instead of into the sump. If the water level rises and falls in the overflow and/or skimmer, the air hole in the Durso cap is too small. If you can increase this to 3/16", usually the problem is solved.

Even ships rust, and they have to paint it while at sea or in the docks. I would sand the areas that are of concern, and apply more paint. Try to limit how much you paint at a time, unless you can ventilate the room well.

I'm sure getting each problem resolved will get you one step closer to perfection.
