JapanReef - 450 gallon In-Wall system

The fan has been on 24/7 since it was installed last October. Think I've gone through 10 PCs in that time so I think it is is to blame. This thing has serious suction. You can feel it when you close teh door as it takes that extra bit of strength to close it. If you have an extraction fan in a toilet/bathroom and have it on you can feel the air rush in under the door. It's like that but x10.

Maybe I should only hook up only one end? As you can see from the pics it sucks in from both ends and the only place it draws in from is through the glass. By having on one end it can draw air in through the other end too. Might be the solution actually......

or vibration. I have a vibration in my van that keeps blowing my headlamps.

Are the corals getting enough flow & light?

My tank goes from 76.5F to 81.5F on a typical Summertime 24hr period.

Definitely suck from one end. And if you want, pull the glass out slightly to create a 1" gap at the opposite end to allow air to pass through it more easily.

Definitely install those VorTechs. :)

Glad to see you back. I guess if Friday is "Tank Day" then Saturdays are when we'll get weekly updates? ;)

Wow welcome back... Sucks about your corals..What cost made you wear down on maintnance? Water Changes, salt calcium, which one was eating you up the most?Ho w was your overall feeling with the nitrate reactor

Marc, going to install the Vortechs on Friday. Need to get a new pane of glass so will order it with the 1" gap for sure.

Eric, was a combination of alot of things but not having enough spare RODI and the cost of replacement filters and the whole Vortech debacle really got to me. The nitrate reactor seems to do the job. Don't have much diatom these days.

I know you mentioned you wanted a 180gpd RO/DI system. I would almost prefer that you use the current one (minus the membrane) and tie it into a Merlin system. Those Merlins use two membranes that produce something like 800gpd. It doesn't use a DI though.

The benefit of using the older system is it will be your prefilter to protect the dual membranes. Membranes have to be replaced annually, but you'll never wait on water again. ;)

Marc, I need to upgrade my RO/DI production...why do you like the Merlin? Got a link?

Google is your friend. :)

The people I recommend it to are those that have massive systems. People like you, Steve Weast, Keith, etc... they don't have time to wait for water. My reef setup works fine with 100gpd, as I can have 50g in 12 hours. Or I can call my LFS if I was really up a creek, I guess.

thanks for the link...I could still pass it through DI if needed...should have Googled it myself but figured you might have an aquatic supplier in mind. :)

I can tell you whom not to use. Or you could type in various suppliers in this editor, and see which ones are on the profanity filter.

I remember seeing something about these before, but there was some negative aspect I cannot recall right now. Currently I use two 60gpd units side-by-side for my reef system, and a 50gpd system for my FW planted, drinking, and ice machine. One issue is that my incoming water is very cold, and another is that the Merlin stated regection rate varies greatly...more than I would be comfortable with, wthout running it through a DI bed for the reef application.

Since my booster pump has seized up on me, it may be time to look into this further. I also just bought a 200g fiberglass tank to hold RO/DI water, and I need to get that installation figured out.

I like things nice and simple so I think I'll just bite the bullet and get a beefy RODI system.

I can only encourage you to do that, and to test the purified water on a regular basis. I use the "brine" to water my vegetable garden! :)

Anyone have any other ideas on a high capacity RODI unit. The SpectraPure unit is looking good but if anyone has good experiences with another one, please let me know.

Spectrapure is good and they have a higher volume unit. I am using their resins right now with good results, but I am not sure I buy into the expense vs. output. The Merlin has serious output at about the same price right?

Also, I have seen reefers use nothing but resin purification that is paid for by the gallon like you do with water or electricity. That's worth looking into as well. Serious commercial RO/DI units are extremely expensive IMO. Steve Weast uses SpectraPure.

I don't need any higher output than 180GPD and if it's from a unit with a good reputation and is the same price as something less know that does twice the output, I'd just rather not risk it. If Steve Weast uses SpectraPure then that's all the endorsement I need. Time to make that credit card bleed. :)

Really enjoying getting back into reefing in a big way. :)

Jason at PremiumAquatics - top guy. I think PA is going supplant MD as my retailer of choice even though they are sometimes slightly more expensive (not by much) and MD seem to have better shipping rates. I started using PA 2 years ago because MD don't ship lights and fixtures. I've been through alot of PCs on my reefing journey and I don't think one has ever arrived broken - and same for the halide lamps.

So I spent a grand on 10 x 36" 96w Power Compacts and 6 x 400w Radium 20k lamps. Yep, I'm switching from Hamilton 14k to the more blue Radium 20k. Main reason for this is I found I enjoyed the tank the most after 6pm when only the PCs were on. The Radiums are even bluer than I thought but I have to say I'm totally psyched to have them and in my current lazy state it helps to motivate me. :p

Been having some seriously hot and humid weather here the past few weeks with it hitting 37C (100F) on most days. Even with air con and extractor on the water has been hitting 29C (84.5F). So what I've been doing is turning the extractor fan off at night. This allows the air con to chill the water down to about 26.2C (79.5F) and then the temp only rises to 28.3C (83F) during Halide hours. It's a bit of a swing but within parameters I'm sure.

Still waiting on the SpectraPure unit. I tried to cancel it at MD but they said SpectraPure had already sent the unit and I couldn't cancel. I tried to cancel as Jason at PA informed me SpectraPure are discontinuing the SpectraPlus line in favour of the newer (and cheaper) MaxCap line. Another reason to choose PA. Rather than just order the unit he spoke to SpectraPure and gave me vital info. Now I'm stuck with a unit that I probably won't be able to get replacement cartridges for in a year's time.

Anyhow, still need that unit asap because my nitrates are at about 10. I don't feed a huge amount but the 8 months without a water change and degraded performance on the skimmer due to neglect of cleaning is obviously leaving its mark. So the denitrator is not working, heh.

As soon as I get the water parameters sorted out I'm going to get some more livestock. Think I'll be getting more rock and completely re-doing the aquascape first though.

I'll leave you with a nice pic from a Japanese fish importer I have used in Tokyo. Although this fish is not exactly imported. This year they seem to have alot of them and this also means they are getting cheaper. They are priced $570 to $650 compared to $800 last year. If they still have some in about October I might just treat myself (to a pair if possible). :)
