jawfish and tiger goby

Ok so before making my purchases I researched both fish. I had a yellow headed jawfish and decided to add a tiger watchman goby. They were fine for a few days then my jawfish found the opening where My refugium hangs and made its way onto the carpet.

I know the jawfish can be bullied by other burrowing fish but I thought since the jawfish had made its home before hand it was fine.

I am in the process of building a canopy for my tank so there will be no openings to make its way out. Being that the tiger goby has made its territory is it too late to get another jawfish?

I have had both together before. I would say that the long term issue with keeping the jawfish will not be realted to the goby, but making sure that thier are no places for the next to jump out of, and making sure the tank is set-up appropriately.

Not sure if the tank in the avatar is the tank where the jawfish is going, but it doesn't look like there is more than an inch or two of substrate in that tank. You should have 4-6 inches minimum, with gravel of mix sizes, pieces of rubble rock, shells, etc. for them to build an appropriate home.

The picture in the avatar is the tank. There is about a 3in sand bed in it. 100 lbs of sand in a 72 gallon. I have various sized grains of sand with some pukka shell on top as well. I had one side of the tank at about 4-5 inch's when I had the jawfish. Even then he decided to make his den under a rock that is supported up with a PVC pipe and eggcrate table. (the 3 large rocks rocks all have this support. I don't know if that would put stress on the jawfish or not having a cave instead of a den.

4 to 5 inches of substrate with mixed gravel and a few rocks to create burrows underneath is probably enough, although not ideal. Pearly Jawfish can be somewhat problematic to get them through the initial stress of going to a new tank. First in is preferred as anything else that may stress them just complicates the process.

Might want to consider either a Dusky or Black-Capped/Tiger Jawfish. Both of these are bigger than Pearly Jawfish, but both are hardier, and tend to be able to take care of themselves a little better. Tiger will do more hovering above their burrow, Dusky you won't see more than the top of thier head most of the time.
