Jawfish - who here has them?

They are fine with smaller or equal size fish. Large and especially fast swimming fish may cause them to be more reclusive.
The perlies are probably the best suited for a reef tank since they seem to be quite social and like to gang up in a community burrow which gives them an advantage over the more solitary species.
Though I personally prefer the larger or less common species.

Most in the trade are tropical species and prefer normal reef tank temperatures. The BSJ are the only ones commonly commonly found in the trade who seem to like lower winter temperatures.

The new guys seem to get better, though I'm still not sure if the spots they had were ich or flukes:

Though I just saw that my East Pacific tank has a clear cut case of ich - the BSJ and the pipefish have it. It must have been in there since the beginning (BSJ were scratching all along) but only seem to have gone bad now that the temperatures go down - which makes me wonder if these guys really like it cold...

Good thing is that this is basically a FOWLR tank so I can just change the whole tank to hyposalinity (after catching out the few snails and hermits).

Everything I've ever read on pearly jawfish suggests that 4" is the absolute minimum sand bed requirement.

I'm confused as to why some folks here are suggesting that 2" would be adequate?

You correct for the most part on the 4", but if you have enough substrate for them to build up there own 4" burrow you will be fine. Also remember it is small rocks and shells they need to stack there house with.

My office tank only has 4" on the right

The next is my wife's with yellowheads when first setup

The following is after a few months

And another

I can only tell you that I have roughly 2-2.5" of sand and he made a pretty good size burrow under a rock. He collects pebbles around the area to reinforce the walls and also uses some to close up the entrance to the burrow at night. I'm not sure what the extra 2-4" of sand would do for him/her.

Jawfish naturally are vertical not horizontal fish like gobies

Has anyone added a square glass box 4" high to create the depth need for a burrow? Size could obviously be dependent on tank size. Would be an easy way to create more ideal substrate conditions for jaw fish. I've thought of putting in an 8"x8" glass or acrylic box that is 4-5" high just for this purpose. Surround it with rubble that is cemented together.
