JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Huge problem with 28 nanocube hood. I popped it off to replace stock MH light. Everything looked good except some light rust on some of the screws holding the plastic cover and rubber seals. Popped it off again 2 weeks later to again change the bulb to a 20k and all the screw grommets werw cracked and broken. I didnt over tighten the screws the first time. I did add a little white grease to each screw to prevent the rusting. Now all the attachment points of the clear plastic shield are broken. Isthis a common problem with the nanocube hood?

Now I have to find a replacment source.

Never had a problem with mine even after long term use and several disassemblies. Never heard of this either.

Given the timeframe of the damage after you disassembled it, I'd say it's pretty clear to deduce that you either overtightened the screws or there was a reaction with the grease you used.

That being said, if you cant find a replacement I have a CF-Quad hood thats been laying around for years. Not sure if the glass is the same as the MH version. I'd be happy to ship it to you cheap, just PM me.

appreciate the offer. Im not sure its compatable either. hmm.

My screws rust too. I've taken apart the hood a few times to do some cleaning and get rid of salt creep but I've never had anything crack or break.

You can order a new plastic splash guard. I got one on amazon. Its around $60 though. My screws also rusted and the heads sheared off when I tried to take them off. Had to go to Home Depot to find "close enough" replacement screws. The original ones are 2.9 x 13mm. Hard to find to say the least. Just be sure to replace with stainless steel. It'll last longer than zinc or whatever was cheapest at the time they built it.

I replaced my screws with #4 screws that are 1/2" and are stainless steal. Worked great.

heat problem

heat problem

i have a 28g jbj nano. i have placed a maxi jet 1200 with a hydor rotating head mounted on it in the tank. the temperature was stable at 78 degrees before the maxi jet. now the temperature is hovering above 82 degrees. any ideas on how i can keep the temperature down while waiting for my chiller to arrive (i ordered it today). without the maxi jet there is not enough flow for the corals already in the tank.
also, i would like to place the hydor rotating heads on the returns. has anyone tried this before. if they slow the flow a little from each pumps volume i hope to be able to run both pumps at the same time. will the hydors slow the flow enough that it wont overrun the intake? none of the fittings that came with the hydors will work to connect to the stock returns. any ideas here?
does the maxi jet 1200 have a higher flow rating than the stock return pumps? is so, i will run two maxi jet 1200 in the returns to increase the overall flow in the tank. then i could alternate the pumps with the wavemaker and still get more overall flow and also still use a circulation pump in the tank. any help would be appreciated.

possible ballast problem, Light keeps turning off

Hey looking for some help. I have a jbj 28 with the 150 watt metal halide. My light keeps turning on and off. I tried switching to a old bulb and still had the same problem. Im guessing there is a problem with my ballast, any help would be appriciated.

I had this issue and it was my ballast. I removed the switch so now it's on a timer.

With that said the unit will turn off if the fans are not working correctly, so that is where I would start.

28gtortuga,

See my comment a few posts up about Hydor rotating heads. I have 2 going.

As far as Heat, Yes, the Maxijet's create a lot more heat. Get a small fan that will blow into the center chamber. Should drop temp about 3 degrees or so.
Personally, don't think you should go with Maxijets but you can read my post above.

I never had any issues with the Hydor heads not fitting with the supplied adapter into the return holes. You do have to remove the current adjustable heads by twisting them off first though.

Maxijet 1200's run at 298gph and take 20watts each. Accella stock pumps run at 266gph and take 14watts each. Not much difference except in the heat they generate.

Just a followup on these return pumps, they have been running good. I've had to clean them twice now since installing, basically back flushing them with tap water from the faucet to force out mulm within the intake.

They are a lot smaller than the stock or mJ's; probably similar to the eheim's in size but I think they are less wattage. Probably less heat...

Nice thing is they are small, light, you can zip tie their power cord to their return hose; this makes it an easy package to disconnect and lift out and clean.

Hi,

I've been starting up a JBJ 28 CF for a few months now, I've been lazy with getting equipment together, etc...

Anyway, I didn't like how large the return pumps are with relation to the return chambers, so I was looking for a smaller alternative.

I found that Hydor makes a smaller return pump, but is low power and not designed for back-pressure (head). I decided to give it a shot. So I got two of these:
http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_viewi...utm_campaign=aquariumtanksupply&utm_medium=na

They are rated for 300 gph at 8 watts; nice thing is that the power cord comes out in the same direction as the outlet water. They are much lighter than the stock pumps. I am basically able to just hang them in the chamber by the return tubing and power cord.

I used the boiling water dip to get the 1/2" ID tubing on the pump outlet, then I zip tied three times up the tubing to the power cord, with the elbow connected on the end. When I clean, I can just twist off the elbow and remove the entire assembly.

I is very quiet, no vibration. I run both pumps at the same time, they are not on the wave maker. Without the outlet diffuser, I think the flow was a little too much, as I was getting a little salt creep on the back of the hood, behind the overflow. I put back on the diffusers, and now I think it's pretty good.

I've just had them running for about a month now. I'll let you guys know if they hold up for a decent amount of time.

Side Note: I'm also running two regular Hydor nano 425s inside the tank, they are on the JBJ supplied wave maker at about 90 seconds (I think).

thanks for the input. i tried every possible adaptor and combination of included with the hydors and no dice. for now i will run the stock pumps with the stock diffusers attached. and run the maxi jet with the hydor in the tank. good enough. chiller is on the way. so.....i will def take the advice on the hydor pump/s for in the tank to get a lower wattage so less heat in the tank.

When I had hydors I don't think I ran any adapter at all, but it escapes my memory. The overflow on the JBJ keeps up just fine with 2 1200's going btw, it's the media basket that doesn't keep up.

I have the Maxi Jet 900 utility pumps in mine (not the powerhead, the greenish unit) and those use 11w. I don't really count the returns as part of the tanks flow in my head though.

I've heard that the Maxijet 900's are the ideal choice for having both return pumps running simultaneously. I do know they run at 233gph so a little less than stock.

Hi guys,
I've been having trouble with a lot of particles all over the tank, I'm sure it's debris, sand and this kind of stuff. The thing is I can't place a mechanical filter because of my tunze 9001 in the central chamber.. Any ideas?

So how long have you had these particles? In my experience particles will eventually settle out somewhere with or without mechanical filter floss unless you have pumps blowing right at the sand. Is there a chance that these are actually microbubbles? If it's not that, I'd put a couple of filter floss pads in chamber 2 and 4 for a few hours and see what I pick up then throw them out. It may mess with your levels so I'd watch it when I did it.

i also have the same particles. swirling around the tank. def not microbubbles. also, after i placed a maxi jet 1200 in the tank with a rotating hydor the temp rose from 78 degrees to 85 degrees now. i am getting a lower wattage pump to place in the tank with the hydor rotating head on it. but would like to clear up these particles.

I'm new to the hobby again after a 22 year layoff. A lot has changed in the way tanks are maintained/filtered etc. I've got some catching up to do!

You cant see the particles here, just a pic to show my tank. Lol.

But as for the microbubbles I don't think they are the issues. I've been thinking that my vortech might be messing arround with the sand and stuff.

Did you remove the magnet to get place the Tunze in the center chamber?

Can you fit any mechanical sponge under the output?

My JBJ.
