What is in the tank right now and what do you plan to put in it later? That will determine what light cycle you should use.

You won't need a skimmer to begin with but as the bio load increases you may want to add one. I like the Aquamaxx HOB-1 but it hands on the back outside the tank and some people don't like that.

For stocking I am hoping to get 4 or so fish and mostly soft corals. I really like zoos but want to keep torch and other things. Tank is blacked out not as it is cycling.

If you are not going to do sps or high end lps then I wouldn't complicate the setup and just stick to weekly 5 gallon water changes and monthly changing of your carbon and other media. Clean any sponges and replace any pads every other day and they should thrive.

So what is recomended light cycle for intermediate LED if I wanted to keep a mixed reef. Thinking of rics, frogspawns or something similar, and montis and acros eventually? Curious if moonlights are meant to run 24/7, all night, or parti night

I recommend main whites on for 6-8 hours. With the sunrise lights on an hour before and after. My mom lights stay on 24/7 but that's just because I can't fit another timer in the power strip. :) they aren't bright enough for photosynthesis but I think they keep the fish from resting completely. Just make sure you add time slowly over weeks so that you don't shock your corals.

Sounds like what I've got going right now. So what do you guys think is ideal for the moonlights? Mine are staying on all night at this time. I have another timer but have to figure how to get it on the strip if I want to set them on a timer

Off the current topic but I thought I'd share. I have the professional LED version of this tank and one of the daylight LED strips / rows went out. That's 5 of the 25 daylight LEDs. I looked online to find a replacement and they sell them only as 5 LED strips for about $90 each strip. I pulled out the bad LED strip and tested each LED individually. There was only one that went out and the other 4 worked just fine. I searched around online and only found one or two places that had something that seemed to be the right specs. I found some 3W 14k button LEDs on ebay. I bought a 10 pack for about $8 and free shipping. I soldered the new one in place of the old one that went out and it has been working perfectly for about 2 weeks now.
Just thought I share that if you have the LED version of this tank and you have a segment of lights go out you don't have to pay a ton of money if you have some basic electronics testing and repair skills. The part to fix mine cost less than a buck for the single bad LED.
Hope this helps others.

That is great information. I will look for other colors and replace the stock Leds when they fail.

so i bought a Radion two weeks ago, gutted an old CF quad hood I had laying around, and cut a gaping hole in the top so that the radion is mounted on TOP of the hood. All ofthe internal baffles are cut out inside the hood too so there is no obstruction to light diffusion in the tank. I seated the Radion to the hood with black neoprene foam and it looks great and works wonderfully! Heck it looks stock! Its been running for two weeks now and all is well :) Thanks so much for giving me the idea to use my old hood for the Radion mount!

Wow, I can't believe this tank has its own thread! Hey all!

I'm Alex, I got back into the hobby last month after having to leave it behind in 2006. I picked up the JBJ 28 and have established it with fish, inverts and corals. I'm amazed at the developments in aquarium tech in the last several years. You used to need to rig everything yourself. I am still astounded that my pH, ammonia and nitrites are all perfect with little from me other than 3g water changes every week. My nitrates are about 20, which I know is max end of desired.

Any suggestions? I have some bad hair algae and the two little emerald crabs are not able to eat enough (I was hesitant on those things from years past, but had to try them out again). I don't want to do a rock scrape, as I'd upset my entire rock setup, plus the live rock has some good hitchhikers I don't want to lose. I also have diatom on the glass of course, but I use the magnetic thingy to scrape it daily. I only see my astreas and linckia star eating that stuff anyway.

I currently run the lights and moonlights on alternating 12 hours each, and this week I started my first refugium ever. (They used to be hard, so I never tried before.) I bought the magnetic light and I have charcoal in chamber one, chaeto in chamber two and nothing in the third. Should I do a sponge? I have 20lbs of live rock. I poured a bottle of pods in, but what else might I need to do for a fuge?

I use the alternating timer for the powerheads on 90 second intervals. I bought the UV filter but was then informed that might kill pods so it's not on. I was advised the skimmer is unnecessary. I put a regular airstone pump in under the sand just to have oxygen circulation. Should I get the JBJ rotating powerhead to give my LPS more flow?

I will be visiting here regularly. It's gonna take days to read all the posts on this thread! Please reply with any suggestions about anything at all!

LTJGAlex ,are you useing ro/di water, the liverock could be leaching some phosphate causeing the algae. Also is the tank new or used, the lighting could also cause problems, esp cfls when they get old.

Heres mine. When I got it I never used any of the filter stuff provided I took the basket put filter floss in top live rock pieces in middle and carbon in bottom! I change the filter floss every 2-3 days and the carbon about 3 months thats all ive ever used and have a heavy stocked tank and have had no alge problems at all or anything.

Here it is from 2 weeks ago
