Wow, I can't believe this tank has its own thread! Hey all!
I'm Alex, I got back into the hobby last month after having to leave it behind in 2006. I picked up the JBJ 28 and have established it with fish, inverts and corals. I'm amazed at the developments in aquarium tech in the last several years. You used to need to rig everything yourself. I am still astounded that my pH, ammonia and nitrites are all perfect with little from me other than 3g water changes every week. My nitrates are about 20, which I know is max end of desired.
Any suggestions? I have some bad hair algae and the two little emerald crabs are not able to eat enough (I was hesitant on those things from years past, but had to try them out again). I don't want to do a rock scrape, as I'd upset my entire rock setup, plus the live rock has some good hitchhikers I don't want to lose. I also have diatom on the glass of course, but I use the magnetic thingy to scrape it daily. I only see my astreas and linckia star eating that stuff anyway.
I currently run the lights and moonlights on alternating 12 hours each, and this week I started my first refugium ever. (They used to be hard, so I never tried before.) I bought the magnetic light and I have charcoal in chamber one, chaeto in chamber two and nothing in the third. Should I do a sponge? I have 20lbs of live rock. I poured a bottle of pods in, but what else might I need to do for a fuge?
I use the alternating timer for the powerheads on 90 second intervals. I bought the UV filter but was then informed that might kill pods so it's not on. I was advised the skimmer is unnecessary. I put a regular airstone pump in under the sand just to have oxygen circulation. Should I get the JBJ rotating powerhead to give my LPS more flow?
I will be visiting here regularly. It's gonna take days to read all the posts on this thread! Please reply with any suggestions about anything at all!
