JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Microbubbles in tank through return pumps. Can someone tell me how I can get rid of these or post a link to the thread regarding this topic?
this question comes up quite a bit on this board. There are a couple of things you can try.

First, the old wavemaker will default to both pumps in the on state after a power reset. To fix it, turn the dial all the way to the left - and then back to the right to the location you desire.

Second, if you have the wavemaker set to too long of a cycle - water will fall quite a ways coming out of chamber 2/4 causing bubbles being sucked directly into the display. Dial the cycle time back to around 30-45 seconds.

Third, place some media in chamber 2/4 to help resolve the bubbles. The original factory sponges work great (make sure to clean them every 7-10 days). You can get replacements on most websites that stock nano equipment.

Yes the stock wavemaker is awful, I would recommend to get a better one, I wish JBJ would of replace these things its for sure a problem.

I took out the sponges completely, I also replaced both stock pumps with Maxijet 1200 pumps.

I got my skimmer pump yesterday and there for sure bubbles but no foam yet? So im hoping this pump works with my sapphire skimmer.

Now my question regarding the LED hood, Im confused on what to order from nanotuners, I want the 5.6 hood but light configuration, etc?

Hello guys,

I bought a vortech mp10 for my jbj 28g nano-cube LED.
Any of you that have this pump care to give me some advice about programming and best placement?
I'm using it at random lagoon mode right now, but even at middle strength it's digging a hole at a specific spot on the sand bed.

Thanks.

28 Gal Nano with LED Lighting?

28 Gal Nano with LED Lighting?

After a 10+ year absence from a reef aquarium I'm thinking about getting this aquarium setup; does anyone out there have one? Really like the idea of LED Lighting but is it enough for corals? Also is there room for a skimmer and what kind would you suggest?

Yes I have one, Great, The new ones come with LED Lighting. Yes there is room for a skimmer, it actually comes with one but not great.

Skimmers Recommended is Euro Reef nano skimmers for the JBJ.

I beleive the JBJ Hood LED is comparable to 150 Metal Halide.

Also I would suggest replacing stock pumps with Maxi Jet 1200's for more flow. The good thing about LED is will eliminate the need for a chiller.

I'm about to get a LED Hood, They have one complete(JBJ) or the retrofit from Nanotuners, Im not sure the difference between the two.

I would also suggest a aquarium controller with Auto Top Off as these tanks get low quickly.

My JBJ will be turning 3 this month. It was completely broken down to sell, but I kept it, these are current pictures of it.

JBJ HQI, no skimmer, no media rack, no ATO. Just the basics. Oh Phoenix bulb.
Dose parts A/B and routine wc.

Thanks for the response. Any suggestions on a controller? That was something that was just getting popular when I got out

there is also a DIY Controller, Apex Lite has all the bells and whistles. I think im going Apex right after I upgrade to LED. I beleive I will not need the chiller once I go LED.

JbJ28gHqi-new set up, advice appreciated.

JbJ28gHqi-new set up, advice appreciated.

Hi, I have just joined 'Reef Central' after spending the last week trawling the forums and found it a plethora of helpful information.

I have been keeping Marine fish on & off for the last 20years but only recently got the bug for a complete 'reef' set-up.

I started out about six months ago with a small 'Wave' nano tank with live rock & HOB filter & recently added a HOB 'Wave' skimmer which i found useless. As everything seems to have outgrown the tank i have just decided to invest in a bigger system, a JBJ 28g HQi, which so far i'm v.impressed with. I am just in the process of setting up the jbj and my plan is to transfer everything from the Wave nano once it is ready.

Below is a picture of my existing 'wave' set-up. it is approx 6mths old and have had quite good success with it, the health of my Gorgonian dictates to me if my water conditions are correct & he seems v. happy - the only problem i have had is when i introduced an emerald green crab to remove a plague of bubble algae i had a couple of months ago. Basically he did (& has continued to do) his job v.well but then one night i spotted him climbing all over the Cauliflower coral i have (see top RHS of pic) the coral excreted a milky substance which my yellow polyps & venus trap polyps both got a big mouthful of!!!! -the yellow polyps died completely. I am not sure whether to transfer the cauliflower to my new tank in fear of this happening again.

My main questions are related to my new JbJ28g hqi set-up and i wonder if anyone can help me.

1. i have put 1x 20lb bag of LIVE Carib sea fiji pink substrate in, is this enough? should i put more in & go for a deep sand bed?

2. i have been researching HOB refugems, in particular the ones from Mj aquatics (uk) has anyone successfully fiitted one of these to the back of a 28g JBJ? and if so does it need any mods?
i was going to use 'miracle mud' in the fuge & cheat.

3. in the filter basket i am using the following : 1. polyfilter 2. Rowphos 3. charcoal (which i intend to change for crushed live rock once tank has settled)
i currently have about 10kg live rock in the display and when its ready i have the contents of the 'wave' tank & about another 4kg mature live rock.

4. in my existing tank the coral sand had literally dozens of tiny white starfish (the mother (i think) hides in a rock & has black striped legs) anyone know what they might be? and also loads of strange looking critters & worms etc -Q: would u transfer this sand & its inhabitants to the new tank, or could it be more trouble than its worth..

sorry for all the questions, this is my v. 1st post, and i hope someday i too can help other reefers

appreciate any help anyone can give

Two quick questions here:

1. I know this has been asked time and time again, but does anyone have any new thoughts on control of hair algae? I do water changes and everything, but am still having troubles with it. Just want to see if there's something new that I might try.

2. How do you all deal with keeping the hood clean? Specifically the fans and the shield that sits directly below the light. The light shield is continually getting a good build up of salt residue and what-not. I scrape it once in a while, but it just doesn't seem to really stay clean. The fans are normal dust though. I would hit them with electronics cleaner, but I don't really like the thought of spraying it where it could get into the water.

I usually give the fans a quick blow out with a can of compressed air when I take the hood off to change bulbs or clean the shield. Be care not to blow too much direct air onto the fans, you can spin them too fast and burn them out.

I'm having a renewed bought with hair algae as well. Trying all the standard stuff, but it's not working. If anyone has a new and improved remedy I'd be game to hear it as well

I utilised vodka dosing (with the standard stock skimmer) and got rid of hair algae.

In fact my tank is so clean its sterile now. Nitrates and phosphates are zero and corals have gone so pale I have lost one or two frags. I have doubled fish feeding and the situation has halted and frags have begun to recover.

One thing I have learnt is that the bacterial method is very powerful and can strip nutrients from the water. I have no algae whatsoever now on my rocks.

I've done the Vinegar dosing before (which is supposed to be equivalent to vodka dosing) - how much are you doing per day with the Vodka dosing method?

I lost my tank notepad, but I know at one point I was dosing 1ml Smirnoff vodka, and then dosing 0.2ml every two days. I then stopped Vodka dosing and tried Zeovit for 2 months, but only with the basic bacteria and carbon source with the stones in a mesh bag.

Ultimately the bacteria method/zeovit/whatever etc bacteria worked for my tank.

Let me add that how long it takes will depend on how much phosphates etc is locked into yor sand and rocks, your fish load and what food you feed the tank.

It took me more than 6 months to get to the sterile condition. I just didnt think it would happen, but now I am feeding so much to raise the damn nutrient levels as my corals are suffering.

My JBJ28 is up and running for about a month now. Just live rock/sand and some coral right now. Going to wait a little while before adding fish. Upgraded the wave maker and based on what I read, I ordered two maxi-jet 1200 pumps to change out the stock pumps. They should arrive end of this week. Thought that would increase my flow but now I am reading that there's not much difference in the rating between the stock pumps and the 1200's. Would rather not add a pump inside display if possible. Why do so many recommend switching to the 1200's then? Just the noise? So far the stock pumps have been pretty quiet.

Get an MP10.. Low profile and will give you plenty of flow..
