JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

in the 28 gallon nano what should i run in my media chambers? I am going to go reef so i was told i dont want carbon as it removes many of the trace elements is this true and what would you recommend to run in a reef aquarium

Also can i put phospate remover in a media bag and in one of my chambers? or does that only work in a phosphate reactor

you'll find two or three different answers for this. first, you'll find those (like me) who put a tunze 9002 skimmer in the middle chamber, then figure out a way to have phosphate remover in a baggie in one of the chambers. carbon is also very important to run because it removes certain toxins from corals fighting each other, not sure who told you not to run it.

you CAN go and buy HOB reactors. but, i've been filtering my water through media bags in my 70, 90, and now my 28. the water flows through the bags. the reactors may or may not work better, all i know is my phosphates have almost always tested near zero while using seachem's phosban in a baggie. some people also put chaeto in the chambers as well

if you're using the media basket, look into stevieT's upgraded basket for flow reasons. you'll fit more media in, and guarantee that all your water will flow through it. i haven't seen much of an issue with having phosban in one chamber and carbon in the other besides space issues. i'm running out of room back there...

Yes, I'm afraid that is right. I figured this out after I bought Urbaneks original design AND the Tunze skimmer. I'm using the basket right now.

all i find is the inTank media basket is this one good? is it the same as the urbanek's media basket because this is all i find and its $50 is there any place else i can get this cheaper?

Urbanek's is different but gets the job done. It is also cheaper than Intank's I believe. If your crafty just make one to your satisfaction, that's what I did.

Ordered!

Ordered!

Well, i went down to the lfs today to order my JBJ nano 28 LED, and the guy comes out with the unit, and it is like 150.00 less (i cant remember the exact diff in price) than what i had been thinking. So, im looking at the box and somewhere it says, or he says, "intermediate"?? I asked the sales guy what that meant, and he says that it is the "cheaper" LED version...??? I was confused, i didnt know there were diff LED versions out there. So, he ordered me the better of the two, i guess. It has 25 x 3w 14k and 4 x 3w actinic and the 2 x 1w moon, nitevue leds. Is this the same unit alot of you guys/gals have?? I want to make sure i am getting the most updated one.

Those are the specs on the one I got at the beginning of the year. You can check JBJs site to see for sure. I wasnt aware of the lesser version.

Wow, there is an intermediate JBJ 28 gal LED!! This is new on there website. I have the original one, the one that does not say INTERMEDIATE. Scared me there for a minute.

If you search for users: Urbaneks you should find the info you need to order one of his media baskets.

Yeah, here's a link to it:

Looks like it's 27 watts as compared to the 89 watts of the "professional" one (as it's called on JBJs website). Seems to be a $150 difference between the two. I can't seem to find specifics on what the differences between the two lighting systems is. As in, are they just lower wattage LEDs, or fewer LEDs, or is it missing the Actinics, or what???
Anyway, I could see the appeal to a lower wattage LED version; the one I have is pretty intense and if you're just doing softies you could definitely go with a lower intensity set-up and still be quite successful.

The "intermediate" version has 25 x 1w daylight, 4 x .5w dusk/dawn, and 2 x .5w moon.
Anyway, i just got my tank set up and filled with sand and salt , going down today or tomorrow to get some live rock, and then the cycling begins!!

Thanks for the info Scott, where did you find that, what site?
Seems like a decent set-up for softies. Mine is pretty intense for my rics.

I got the info from the lfs. When i went to pick up my unit, i also took a look at the intermediate and compared the info. same unit except for the wattage on each led :)

Just posting a little update on my jbj 28.
