JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Anyone think running the center media chamber of the basket is beneficial? also, will the JBJ ATO system work on this tank?
Might be better to ask if anyone thought it was NOT beneficial. I ran purigen there before my phosban reactor, now I use mechanical filtration sponge in the center chamber of the basket.

Been reading through the thread here and I cant seem to find an answer to my question. I dont see anyone running the 1w LED hood. And I see some are happy and some not with their 3w hoods. I have interest in keeping mostly lps and softies but dont want to "under power" the tank either. I have a shallow rimless now with an AI Sol over it so I already know I will be somewhat perturbed by the inability to dim which has me gun shy on the 3w.

So my question is... anyone running the 1w version? Impressions? For you 3w owners I assume you really need to toy with coral placement due to the inability to dim... anyone having problems with bleaching or scorching?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Mark

Well... i was surprised I didnt get any input on this so I decided to go with the 3w version. After looking at corrado's internal hood shot it looks like this would be fairly easy to mod with a dimmable meanwell so I will go that route if need be. The tank is pretty much what I expected so I wont comment on that. My initial impression on the LED hood though is mixed. The light output from the whites is fine I think the spash shield really knocks the par down. I plan on taking a par meter and measuring with and without. I am disappointed in the lack of switches to "manually" control the lighting. I know they recommend the use of timers on the white and dawn to dusk but it would have been a nice touch. I will be hooking up to my Apex so its not a big deal for me but I can see it being an issue for others. The only thing I was really really disappointed in is the fan noise. It is as loud as my daughters BC14 with PC bulbs. Not sure if its the quality of the fan or a design flaw but will be looking to replace those immediately. Anyway looking forward to getting my LR and stock moved over. All in all I am pretty pleased with the tank.

maybe there is an issue with your fans? I have the same tank and the fans are practically silent.

yeah not sure. Will be taking a look "under the hood" so to speak to see whats up. Noise is one of those relative things too so it may just be me. Thanks for the input.

Hey guys, new to the nano world. I used to have a 72g reef setup but was forced to tear that down a few years ago. I just purchased the 28 NC LED. I am going to run the Tunze 9002 in the center chamber. Mediabaskets offers a media basket for the first chamber of the 24NC. Question is, is this the same size as in the 28? I would like to use a media basket in the first chamber and was wondering if this fits or if I have to make one.

Sorry if this has been asked before...

Thanks

23.5g?

23.5g?

Well... I filled my tank today and was surprised that totally empty I only got 23.5g into the display and the rear chambers. I have turned the pumps on and the tank is actually a little too full. Anyone else have this experience? Just wondering if somewhere I missed a count though I do not believe I did. If you use the actual tank dimensions of 22x22x18 you come up with 37.7g so I am confused.

Thanks,

Mark

pump removal

pump removal

Well i discovered one of my return pumps on my 8 month old nano cube isn't working. I disconnected it from the pipe 90(without unplugging ...:uzi:) and then the darn thing started. Water splashing everywhere. I reconnected, adjusted wavemaker and then it quit again. So something is up. I need to remove but cannot get it out past the 90 in the chamber--any thoughts on removeal? Am I missing something? Hopefully it's just dirty...

TIA

Todd

Well when in doubt get the tape measure. The tank specs published by JBJ are incorrect. The tank actually measures roughly 18"h x 18"w x22l so that brings total volume to around 30g. Of course I have not accounted for the slightly raised bottom, false walls, and the curvature of the tank. Still perplexed as to my 23.5g that I added to the tank. Sg was added based upon a volume of 23.5g and I have a reading of 1.025/1.026 so I am about 99.9% sure I didnt screw up my water gallon count.

6-line, if you twist the 90 degree elbow you can remove it as well. I don't even take the tubing off it, just break the elbow lose and pull up the pump via the electrical cord.

Seems about right to me. You have to consider the volume displacement of the pumps, media basket, media, heater, sand, liverock, etc. And don't forget that the display isn't filled to the brim, and the pump compartment is well below the top when operating normally.

My tank took about 22g total when I first filled it.

Thanks for responding Carol. Yeah 23.5 was filled to the brim totally empty with the exception of the pumps. I pulled out about another gallon to get the water levels where they need to be so I am now 22.5g which puts me right in line with you. Im just a little anal about things because I dose and I want to be able to measure my results correctly. I assume I will displace another gallon or two once I get all my rock and sand in.

Thanks,

Mark

Barry - I tried to twist the elbow and barely got it to move a half turn. Is it just tight.? I don't want to break the darn thing.....

Not sure who Carol is, but no problem :)

To remove the pump, I just wiggle the top 90deg U-bend that connects to the display return until it comes loose, then pull up on both the return tubing and electrical cord and it comes right out. You may have to pull hard at first to break the suction cups loose. You may also want to try wiggling the pump back and forth slightly in case part of the pump got wedged under the constant volume divider.

I have only had mine for 2 weeks. I modified it by cutting about 1 inch from the horizontal part of the intake tube and replacing the 'T' outflow with a 90 degree elbow. It is super quiet (cant hear it over the stock pumps). It has this neat elbow on the cup to attach a 1/2 inch flex hose and plumb back into the pump compartment so it won't overflow onto the carpet. So far I am happy.

In the second picture down from the top above are 2 black cords going into the chamber for the heater I think. My question is, is that the float valve to a JBJ ATO unit? I'm wondering if the float valve will fit in that compartment meant for the heater in the back? Thanks. Long time lurker, new to post. ;)
