JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Ok guys I bought me a Sapphire skimmer, I got the NC24, because for some reason I thought I had read that the 24 was teh same as the 28 when ordering, or that the 24 can work with the JBJ 28g tank. I ordered mine from Premium Aquatics because they had one in stock, and their local.

My problem is that either I get the skimmer body all the way into the tank, but the collection cup doesnt have room to fit due to the tank lip in the way. Or I raise the body a little out of the water, everything fits, but the collection cup fills up in less than 30 seconds. I seen the NC28 model requires a mod to the tank, do I need to do the same?
Seems like if I did cut that lip out that it would fit right, ANYone have a pic of their lip trim cut out? Its the lip on the very back right?

Thanks!

The NC28 is the same as the AP24. The NC24 is different. The lip on the back of the tank needs to be cut flush. Hopefully, that will make the NC24 fit. I would call Or email Kyle at Sapphire and talk to him. He is very helpful.

No need to call Kyle on this one - follow directions that came with your skimmer. It will explain the lip that needs to be cut to accommodate the skimmer.

Well the directions that came with the skimmer said no modifications to tank needed to be made. Guess I ordered the wrong one, the NC24. But he emailed me back and told me to go ahead and cut the lip off. Will try soon.
Thanks

Hey guys need a little help. Does anyone remember where the post is for the modification to the MJ1200 in a Aqua-C Remora is located? The modification allows the MJ 1200 to be placed where the stock skimmer is located. I have been trying to find it tonight and I am not having any luck. Thanks for the help.

I recently installed the nanocustoms actinic upgrade kit and I seem to be having a problem with my lid overheating; the MH shuts itself off periodically, waits about 5 minutes, then turns back on. This happens about 5 times throughout the day. While it's great that my JBJ nanocube is simulating cloud cover, there is clearly something wrong. I'm 90% sure its the lid overheating because I don't have AC, my room temp is about 78 F in the summer (I keep the water between 78-82 F with heavy evaporative cooling).

My next step was to wire the lid fans into the actinic power supply so the fans turn on with the actinics. Any other suggestions?

Dieing Acros

Dieing Acros

recently (3weeks) purchased a small frag (3") of a Blue Acro for my 28 gallon nano tank.

All tank params are 'perfect'...

pH 8.3
Salinity - 1.025
Temp 79
Alk 9.6
Ca - 450
Mg - 1380
Amonia/Nitrate/Nitrite all zero

I dose Kalk+2 as well as Seachem Reef Builder (to keep Alk up)

So the tank stays stable and I do 10gal water changes every 10 to 14 days.

When I first placed this new acro into it showed full polyp extension for about a week, then the started to retract and I noticed some paling on the shaft and the blue began to fade.

Today I got home from work and found about 80% of its tissue gone!

What happen, everything was going so well...

My tank has both MH and power compact with lots 75x flow - and this coral was placed in this area of high current and flow.

The next day, I check and all that is left is a 3" tall white stock!

Wished I could figure out what happen, especially when all water params are solid and have been for a while.

Did you see any bugs (red bugs, flat worms)? How did you acclimate? Is the tissue gone, or just white? It could be a lot of things. Sounds like rapid tissue necrosis (RTN) if tissue is gone, or bleaching if tissue is present.

I did not see any worms or red bugs (but then again Im not sure I know what red bugs look like, besides being red). Seriously, there was nothing on it other than its own skin which was half off and flapping in the current flow.

This morning all skin is gone and coral is pure white... Im assuming its a gonner and will not recover and that I should remove it from the tank.

For those of you using the center chamber to hold a skimmer, where are you keeping macro algae for a fuge? I thought of using the chamber where the stock skimmer used to be. Is anyone using this space for a fuge?

I'm planning on using the right side (if you're standing infront of the tank) to hold chaeto in a bag. Going to pick up the chaeto tonight and see how it works.

I think most people are going HOB

Sounds like a gonner. It may have not been your tank at all. It may have already been on its way out. I can't think of anything you did wrong.

I use HOB. Not sure there is any other place large enough for any significant chaeto

I ordered me a Sapphire Skimmer AP24 today, will be here tomorrow. I will get some pictures online this weekend of it.

I am thinkiung of buying a HOB overflow and using a small sump, anyone done this yet?

Breeze..

The LFS suggested that 'something' in the tank must have stung it - however there is nothing anywhere around the area of the former tort.

I did notice about 3-5 days after being in the tank, that some of my crabs started crawling on it --- Could it be that hermits eat acros (tort) ? Wouldnt seem possible since many have them as cleaner crew...

As you said may have been bad from the start, I think I'll talk more with LFS and see what/who their source(s) are for corals... Perhaps this was a frag they had gotten from another customer.

One of the challenges with hermits or other scavengers is figuring out cause and effect. These animals eat dead things (one of the reasons we like them). I see posts all the time that say something like "I found my favorite fish dead with hermits all over it. I can't believe those hermits killed my fish!" Most likely, the coral started to die (for a million reasons) and the hermits were just cleaning up.
