JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

I changed the internal bits into an electronic ballast. I figured the wiring etc. There is a seperate transfomer located inside the ballast housing that runs the fans by converting 120v (or 240v UK) down to 10v for the fans.

I posted the mod somewhere a little back. My halide light now runs at 164watts (with 16watts for fans and 150watts for light) instead of 235watts!
 
Yea the ballast sucks. Mine has been on the fritz for several months. Sometimes it doesnt power up the bulb just sits there glowing. If I notice it happen I turn it off for alittle bit and then back on and most the time it will fire up. My top trim is leaking. I need to strip the caulking and recaulk it. Damn salt creep looks like crud.
 
My 28 gallon JBJ is 4 months old! I'm a newbie, and I have no idea how to kill all this hair algae all over my live rocks... any ideas?

Check Phosphate level, use RO/DI only for w/c and do one at least monthly if not more often, cut back on feedings, try red legged hemit crabs. Adding anything chemical wise is just a bandaid, you need to fix the problem. And your tank is still pretty young.:fish1:

It works well for me and was in my price range. I'm sure there's always something better. The only negative thing I have to say about it is it's a little on the loud side, but the tank is in the family room and I can tune it out/have become accustomed to it pretty easily.

Hopefully some others will chime in with some different options for you.

A pic of my JBJ 28, with a 150 watt Phoenix MH, Tunze 9002 in a CPR medium refugium with a West Coast 1/15 chiller. Mostly SPS with clams and some mini carpets. A pair of B/W clowns and three orange Firefish.

Hey guys. I am looking at getting one of these and hopefully joining your group. I am not sure if this has been discussed in the thread but I was wondering if anyone has opted to go with a sump (possibly using a pre filter box or drilling) and if so what equipment did you use.
I was also looking into the possibility of using a chiller (if I go with hqi/ not sure as I may go with leds) as I already have one available but was wondering how it would be connected to the stock setup.

my tank is emptyyyyy, anyway...here's a list of the livestock:
HAIR ALGAE (UGH)
~diamond goby
~algae blenny
~pair of ocellaris clowns
~around 6 zoa frags
~a few hitchhiking mushrooms
~small(ish) toadstool
~nassarius snails

hopefully these frags will spread to the rock and fight off the algae...if that's possible...
getting 6 heads of hammer soon!

Hey Nubey, you did a great job and you sure got alot of stuff. I have never seen the inside of this stand (as I have not bought mine yet) so I dont know if it would have enough room, but I wonder if anyone has remove the inner wall and installed a pre filter box inside the tank running down to a small fuge in the stand? I feel you could then add a few more inches of territory to the display and still add a hob skimmer(if desired)

What are your thoughts?:hmm2:
 
Someone was talking about removing the wall before on this thread so I'd say it's doable. Probably could get a five gallon in there.
 
Hey, has anyone tried installing additional blue leds to either the hqi or pc quad for a simulated sunrise/sunset actinic scenario? is there space under the hood?

Hmm - Just got my JBJ 28G and measured the inside dimensions... 16" tall by 17" wide by (varies but average) 17" back-to-front. That comes to 20 gallons according to the calculator on RC's home page...

Yes, I know, there's space behind the false wall, but I think it's cheating to include that. I have a 150G tank at home (the JBJ is for the office) and I don't include the sump or refugium in the water-volume of that one. I still don't believe there's another 8G behind the wall, either...

Still, it looks pretty good, even if the stand arrived banged-up and missing a screw here or there. The lights work, now I've just got to find a good source of RO/DI water close to work. There's a petsmart locally, but it doesn't look as though they have RO/DI. I've been told Glacier water at Safeway is RO/DI, so I'll try that. I might just use water from the home RO/DI system :)

I believe most tank manufacturer's use the outside dimensions to calculate tank volume. That being said, when I filled mine, it took 20G of water after the rock and sand was placed in the tank.

i was wondering if there are any tips, techniques or special tools you guys use to clean the back of the tank where the pumps are.

Nothing special ... empty all the compartments, then use a 1/4" hose to syphon funk. If you have a glass scraper on an extension, you could use that to scrape the walls (if it's important to you)
