JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Quick question for you guys would the 28g cf need a chiller for the hot California
summer months, the reason i ask my 10 gal fresh would jump up to the high 90's and i would like to avoid that problem. One more thing can you pick different colors for the lights and can they be upgraded to t5's? Do any of you guys wish you would have bought a different tank. as you can tell i cant make up my mind.
Thanks for the help.
You need a chiller in SoCal, I recommend that 1/15 Arctica Titanium Chiller (used if you can find someone getting rid of it :)

Can someone PLEASEt a pic of a Tunze 9002 in the tank? I have a 28gal quad that I just bought and would like 2 see how the skimmer fits in the back. Also has anyone bought the intank.com filter rack if so could you post a pic of that as well?

Thanks
Ron

I can take a picture tomorrow probably. I have the tunze 9002 in the back but let me tell you..cutting off the magnet was not fun especially since I was worried I would cut all the way through and have a hole. The intank custom cup does work well though but you do need to take it off whenever you open the lid (at least you don't have to dremmel the hood though). The skimmer is working well but it is very sensitive to water levels.

Anyone have issues with the stock ballast sometimes not firing the bulb? I am running a 20k radium and half the time the ballast doesnt want to start it up. I have to turn it off an on a dozen times for it to work. Could this be a radium issue or more likely the crappy balast?

FTS FTW

I put on a radium yesterday, and it worked fine. I hope it continues. Try cleaning the contacts of the radium.

two quick questions regarding my 28g.

will removing some of the bars in the overflow increase my water flow?

and is the cheapo protein skimmer that the HQI model comes with, any good? the only thing ive ever used is my Turbo Floater on my 120g, but this stock unit looks cheesy

A quick question for everyone. Would a 28 HQI with a CPR aquafuge be an acceptable home for a Mandarin Dragonette, or would he end up starving after he cleaned out the current stock of pods?

I would appriciate it. My tank dosent have 3 compartments like some others that I have seen. The overflow is in the center which holds the filter media tray then there is a smaller slot on either side of that, I have a heater in one of these. Then there is a small slot on either side of that where the returns are. Which slot does the skimmer go in? Sorry if this makes no sense.:crazy1:

Thanks
Ron

So what's the consensus on the best HOB skimmer? I'm considering replacing my Sapphire skimmer with the Reef Octopus BH-100. I like the idea of HOB so I can still run carbon and filter floss easily. Is the BH-100 as good as the tunze 9002 and sapphire?

How do you all know when it's time to change the HQI bulb? Do you just go on a schedule or actually let them burn out? I plan on getting the Phoenix 14K, right now I still have the stock bulb. I've got a hair algae issue as of late and I'm almost positive it's from my water source - I've been using distilled water from the grocers for water changes and topping off pretty much since I started. I'm getting a Mighty Mite RO/DI next week so hopefully that will help with that and I'm sure it will take some time to notice. But, I got this tank in August and it was used so I'm not sure how long this bulb has been run; the guy said not long at all but who knows, you know? My Nitrates are zilch and I don't have a phosphate test kit. I run the HQI bulb for 8 hrs/day.

Bad news for Sapphire Skimmer owners

Bad news for Sapphire Skimmer owners

Looks like Kyle has closed up shop again. Too bad, good skimmers for this tank. I had a few problems with it new but it has been working great for past 6months. Hopefully someone else will buy the company.

From R__fbuilders:

Sapphire Aquatics, the small niche nano aquarium manufacturer has shut its doors. Some users first reported something was up with the company when the firm decided to stop sponsoring small club sites and in the end stopped communicating with emails. The reason apparently it seems stems from personal reasons versus economic as there was a high demand for products that Sapphire Aquatics produced as the nano aquarium market took off. Browsing the site of the company yields about 3 products in which to choose from and other companies have reported to us that they have been informed that the company is not accepting any orders. While it is sad to see an manufacturer go out of business, hopefully another company will come up and replace the wares that Sapphire Aquatics made.

Saw this in another thread, sad to see a good vendor go :(

anyone feel that 1 Koralia 2 is too much for the tank? or would two smaller ones be ideal?
Been some mixed reviews on here. I assume you are using the k2 to supplement the normal pumps (which are probably upgraded to MJ1200s)? I currently run a single supplementary k1 and I wish I had more flow, but the k2 might be a bit much. Of course if you can afford it, go with a vortech. I'm personally thinking about adding a second k1 (one on either side beneath the out take).

i just got the 28g and havent done anything yet with the returns...been trying to find out if the MJ1200's really make a difference or not.
i have the K2 now and might return it for the K1

Im glad I got my money back from Nanotuners after Sapphire was stringing me and Nick along for two months. To bad though they looked like nice skimmers. Hey NemoNiblets I just got a Reefoctopus extreme 200 for my 125g and rocks! I totally recomend them.

Unless he trains it to eat frozen and feeds it religiously

(and yes, it is possible) :)

^ I do it. No pods left though. I do see a couple on a rare occasion though. I would dose phyto for about a month before you get the mandarin though, so it can get fat before you start to train it.
