JBJ 28 Gallon Nano Owners Club

Has anyone had any leaking issues with this tank? I am on my third tank shipped from jbj, and right out of the box they leak. jbj hasn't really been very helpful in communicating with me to help my fear that this isnt going to continue to happen. who has had this tank setup for a long time with no issues?
3 years+, not a single problem

thanks silver surfer, can you recommend an overflow that would work on my tank?

sorry i am still new to all of this ;), also how would i run the return line? just like i would with the tank drilled?

thanks!

Well, the Sapphire Aquatics one is supposed to be pretty good. Although, they were a small shop and just went out of business. If you can findd one, I'd grab it up

Hey everybody. Joining the "club"... just ordered myself a 28g LED cube.

I'm returning to reefkeeping after a ~10 year hiatus. I had a 40gal mini reef in a custom tank at home and kept a 4.5gal going on my office desk for a couple of years. Last time I was into tanks I cobbled everything together...I had a 175w MH light on my 40g that was pieced together from surplus parts and bubble gum, built my own (5' tall) skimmer, the 4.5g was an electrocution waiting to happen because I had to fabricate my own lamp holder (and wire up remote ballasts) to fit enough CF bulbs under the little hood for proper illumination. Heck, when I say "custom" tank I mean I went to a local glass shop with a list of dimensions and glued the cut glass together on my kitchen table. This time around I'm trying the exact opposite end of the spectrum... start with a pre-built all-in-one and concentrate on maintaining and enjoying, rather than building, the tank. Well, kinda... I can't help tinkering.

I have a question. Maybe it has been answered, but I couldn't find it even with some google "site:reefcentral.com" work.

What's the internal volume, and general layout, of the factory stand? I know it's sized to fit the JBJ 1/15th HP chiller which is 7.7” x 12.6” x 14.1” (or so the web tells me), but I don't know if that's the entire volume, if it has a shelf, or anything else. Just trying to figure out how much (if anything) I can put in there.

Thanks and hello!

LIghting Options for Nano 28

LIghting Options for Nano 28

Hope everyone has a great New Year, Ive been a way for a while...

So long that its time to change bulbs - I think.

I'm running Geissman MH and two of the NanoTuners CF. The CF now have a year on them while the MH has 8 months (2900 hours). I had held off putting any more corals in the tank (waiting for coraline to grown).

Now that Coraline is growing, I noticed my recordia has shrunk, along with my favia and darth maul. Water params have been solid and then I realized that I've got 'old bulbs'.

I was counting on the bulbs lasting 12 months, but now have been told that the stock magnetic ballast not only uses more electricity but also burns out bulbs faster.. Is this true?

At this time, I've got a complete set of CF and MH bulbs and will do a replacement this weekend. However, I've also been told to watch out for the ballast as it will probably go during the 2nd year of operation.

So... Question time...

1) Any experience w/ an electronic ballast replacement? Recommendations?

2) Any expereince w/ taking all lights out and using LED - I'd like to be able to still have 'moon light', dawn/dusk, and daylight... Can this be accomplished with LED? How many does it take to equal a 150W MH?

3) Is it true, that baring any defects once the LED is installed it should last 5 to 10 years?

THanks

THanks

I am looking for a replacement ballast as well. Mine went bad. Recommendations? The original HQI MH has 5 wires and most ballasts I have seen have 3 wires. I am not an electrician either.

Hey guys my wife just got a 28 gal. hqi. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to make it run the best it can? I got her the C-breeze clamp on fan and the led fuge light. . .She's got about 20 lbs of rock and about 3" of sand (40lbs).

I would seriously consider a chiller for the tank as it can get pretty warm. I wiped my tank out with heat and am having to start all over again. It was a very costly mistake that I will not make again. I lost all my SPS and most of my LPS. If you live in a warm climate it would be a good investiment.

It stays cooler most of the year and we keep are house pretty cold, but if I start to see the temp rising too high i'll definately invest in one. Any specific brands and models that would be a good price and work good? What about sump pumps? I'm having some trouble with one of them. It stops working after a while when I use the wave maker.

Soo many posts to reply to :)

SilverRider - I
've got NanoTuners fan kit. It was easy to install, a lot quiter and seem to keep the hood cooler than stock fans.

Question about the MJ1200's. I've have replaced the two stock pumps with MJ1200 as well but only run one at a time and I've got the Vortech MP-10. Is it possible to run the two MJ1200's at the same time? I tried that for a brief moment but the rear chambers got sucked very low - it was almost as if I could not get enough water returned from the main tank into the rear and I wander if having the Tunze 9002 in the center is causing that although I've got it pushed back as far as I can. I thought about running both MJ1200's and then filling up the rear chambers --- But if power goes outI and no water is pumpted into main, I fear this will cause an over flow in the rear.

You prolly can't run both the MJ1200's without making the overflow larger. however, you could decrease the time that your pumps alternate. I keep mine around 1 minute, but you could make it much smaller. If the power goes out, the back will not overflow - it will stop when the water gets level with the overflow (I know from experience).

Thanks for the tip on the fan kit - mine is on back order from Nanotuners

Silver -

I currently switch pumps ever 2 minutes.

I've tried w/ both pumps, filled the back so that the pumps were not sucking and then killed power... I paniced when the water started to rise... but I see what your saying water will seek its own level and the rear wont rise higher than the front.

I have thought about making the overflow larger (cutting some pieces of vertical plastic) - but since Ive got fish in the tank as well, I dont want them getting sucked into the rear chambers.

So I guess I'll just leave things running 1 pump at a time, alternating every minute or so.

I finally stated to get Coraline to grow, but now my corals (recordia, favia, green trumpet) have shrunk --- all water params are good so Im thinking its the fact that Ive got 8 months (10-12hr day) on my MH bulb... So I just replaced that and will see what happens. I may switch to an electronic ballast (hoping for longer bulb life) or I may bight the bullet and go LED.

Anyone tried replacing the standard 150 watt setup with 250W?

I'm just looking for an alternative since I'm currently using the 150w magnetic ballast on my MH bulbs and I'me getting 7-8 months life.

Should I just switch to an electronic ballast?

If/When switching to electonic, should I go bigger (250w)?

Or should I make the jump into LED ?

Just watch the forums here. I got a spectacular deal on a slightly used Current 1/10 hp chiller here.
