I'm looking to do a DIY led upgrade as well. Anybody have any recommendations? Rapid doesn't have a kit yet for our tanks.

I'm sorry I don't have time to search much. Can someone please give me 2 or 3 choices for good drop in no mod skimmers for recent 89w led adv? I'm having trouble finding one with less than a 3" footprint and I haven't heard great things about the JBJ skimmer. Thanks in advance, and I love this thread!

I'm using a koralia 550 ph and it takes up a lot of space. I put it behind the rock facing left to right. Is that too much power? Best placement?
Other than an mp10 is there a smaller unit that provide adequate flow?
I also picked up remora nano for a skimmer. Can I get some suggestions on where and how to mount it? I can't seem the fit the 900 pump and flow back anywhere in back of the jbj28.
I'm certain this was approached before but this thread is SO big, I had trouble finding anything.

I am using a Koralia 3 (850 gph) and I point mine towards the back wall from the left side. It was the only place I could find that did not completely destroy my torch. I am also interested in what other people use for flow.
I also have the remora and could not find a good way to fit it in the back. The pump fits, but it does not sit well. I just have it emptying into two different compartments. Probably not the best solution, but it is better than nothing.

Seems like a pretty big pump for the nano but I suppose it depends what you're going to keep. SPS would likely love it. I have a mixed reef and some of my softies are blown around a bit much by the stock pumps but are doing okay.

Just pull them up by the cord and hose and then disassemble them and scrub the parts with a tooth brush. I think some people soak them in vinegar and then rinse them in RO/DI. If the cleaning doesn't work it may be a good excuse for an upgrade which is fairly common with these guys as well. Best of luck.
thanks! But for some reason the pump is wider than the opening, I messed around with it for a while, but no luck. Also, do you guys ever get sediment in the bottom of the back sump area? I looked at mine today and WOW. I never realized it was there. It's probably the reason my water seems to always have particles floating around in it. I tried to siphon a lot of it out tonight during the water change but there is still quite a bit. Is there an easier way to clean it? Do you guys ever have this happen? I think I might have it because I do not run the media basket, and instead run a skimmer. hmmm

When I put my pumps in I remember having to orient them just right, perhaps a little twisting involved. They had to get in there somehow. I also get the junk in the chambers so I usually siphon from the rear chambers when doing water changes. One, to get the junk out of the chambers and two, to keep the water level in the display as high as possible so corals remain submerged as much as possible.

+1, it will probably take a little wiggling but they will definitely come out. Sediment is definitely expected if you aren't running any kind of floss in your media basket to catch it. I still run a basket with my skimmer for this very reason. It should be easy enough to siphon out though.
good to know I am not the only one with sediment! I went to my LFS today and got a bag of filter floss. I just jammed some in my overflow chamber right beneath my skimmer. I suppose this is ok? haha I will try during my next water change to get the pump out again. I also just ordered a Two Little Fishies Reactor! so I am looking forward to that!

I too have sediment in the back chambers even though I use filter floss religiously. I've siphoned some of it out of the chambers but there's still more than I want back there. Luckily, none seem to make it to the display tank--except after I clean the pumps and they initially suck some of it out (as its already past the filter floss).
Not sure why JBJ made the back compartments so small. You can reach the pumps but I think its a big issue if you have large hands.
And yes, you have to give the pumps a twist to make sure it hits the chamber bottom upon re-installing. I don't mind the Accela pumps--they give decent flow for a softie tank. BUT, be very careful when taking them apart to clean. I've had two of the plastic rods that hold the impellers break when twisting off the outlet. Kinda flimsy in my opinion. When they break, the impellers aren't seated correctly and make an annoying noise when in use.
Luckily, I've found a site that sells the replacement pumps pretty cheap at $16.95. PM me if you want the link.

I was wondering if I hanged a 250 hqi about 15'' from water surface if that would heat the water to much.I have the clip on dual fans that I could use.

Even 15" away, a 250W bulb puts off a lot of heat. It really depends on the climate of the room the tank is in, if you have a chiller, and if using fans, whether or not you mind a lot of evaporation. I had two 250W MH bulbs over a 90g I used to have and used fans to keep things cool but it caused a ton of evaporation. You'd likely need an auto top off with a good size ATO container to keep the water level stable in such a small tank. Just my two cents but I hope it helps.

I've read over much of this thread but having a sick toddler keeping me up all night has made my brain pretty mushy this week LOL
My small dining room tank is a 24g aqua pod (64w stock pc lighting) that I've run for over 5yrs, it's time to replace it and I'm looking at the jbj nano cube quad or intermediate led. I honestly know very little about led other then the obvious things like reduced operating cost, lower heat, long life... but in terms of how it compares to PC lighting I'm clueless. My basic question is: would the intermediate led be similar in light to what I have with the 64w aqua pod? I keep softies though I have had a few hardy sps in my aqua pod in the past (they now reside in my 70G RR Oceanic which runs t-5's). I'd like to go with the LED if it will be enough light to equal (or exceed) what I currently have with the aqua pod but will go with the quad if it isn't.
Thank you SO MUCH! I see both are on sale this week so I want to quickly make up my mind and order before the sale ends.

The quad is going to be a higher light option. My estimate for LED comparison to MH/T5/etc is 2x the LED wattage. So the 27w intermediate is roughly equivalent to 54w T5. I had good luck growing just about anything in my quad, check out my build thread. Id say go with the quad or advanced LED.
The more you invest in lighting up front the more options you have for stocking later. And you won't have to re-spend to upgrade your light. HTH.
I have the quad cf jbj and yes there is a lot more light than all other cf systems.
The problem I have is the blue isnt that blue and the colors of my coral really don't pop.
I had a 14 biocube with and act and 50/50 white/act that made everything look great!
That being said I just ordered a 24 3w led kit for my jbj28.
